You might have bought it from a serious collector, however everything points to the same conclusion Brian reached. Sorry for not having any better news for you.

Hi

The serious collector is not always honest I know perfectly.

This is not good news but it is true despite my disappointment, is it possible to translate the kanji?

Thank you

Oliver,

looks like  GOSHU no JU, smith's name not identifiable for me. This may have to do with the TSUBA possibly being cast. Details often get lost in the process.

Oliver,

have a look at good TSUBA - in hand, in books, and in the internet - and compare. Try to get a sense of what quality, good design, and good workmanship can mean.

Many of us collectors have made mistakes in the beginning, but that is the way of learning - trial and error. The more you see, the more you will be able to differentiate.

Good luck, and don't be disappointed!

Hi  Oliver,

I have the very same tsuba, possibly in a better shape, and I have to confirm it's a cast one. The signature is Gōshū (no) jū Sōten - 州住 宗典 (which is obviously gimei).

The interesting questions now are: why and when these kind of tsuba were produced? The answers are not obvious.

Gentlemen, thank you very much.

I always excellent answers on this forum.

I'll be careful and observe, to learn, to deceive me and get me.

I agree Mauro, it would be interesting to know the production and the age of the tsuba.

Regards,

Oliver
