Hey guys,

I sent my shinshinto blade to Japan last year in September for some restoration work, i.e polishing and a new copper habaki to be made. How long does it usually take from your experiences to get a sword back from Japan? I should also note, that the blade isn't being submitted for shinsa. Only restoration work is being done. The agent whom i sent my blade through keeps telling me that it wont be too much longer etc... Whats your experiences??

Kind regards,

Hi:

I am still waiting for a sword being polished in the U.S. It has been more than two years. BTW I waited nine years for my name to come up to the top of this polishers list. Patience and more patience is needed.

Hi,

I had two swords polished in Japan, one was papered before polish the second after. All up it took about 18 months.

Another collector from NZ waited three years for a katana to be polished, I have been told that the average is a year.

That very much depends on who you are using to polish it, and if they are passing it on to someone else.

I am sure there are some togishi with a shorter waiting period, and some with many years wait.

Some consolation is that the longer you wait...the more your chosen togishi must be in demand by others :)

Brian,

Not to put you on the spot or anything, but knowing that you are fully qualified there in Japan...what is your current waiting period for those that might want to contact you about polishing work?

Regards,

Brian

That very much depends on the polisher doing the work.

As other people have said, as a rule, the better the polisher the longer the wait.

Figure between 12-18 month on average.

Um... Wow.

I just gave a Wakizashi to Bob Benson earlier today for a finishing polish and a Tip Fix. Also some minor rewrapping. He said he'd have it back to me middle of next week. He's a really cool guy, we talked for almost an hour and he showed me some of the projects he's working on. It was really cool of him to help a guy like me out on such short notice... he had over 10 swords from a collector in Germany that he still has to work on... and that was just ONE of his orders. I feel special.
