Darcy Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 Made by Brian Tschernega from a nice set of fittings. The tanto going in this is a signed Kagemitsu. Son of Nagamitsu and father of Kanemitsu. I thought I would share the nice work. Had to agonize over a lot of choices. What to do on lacquer. To wrap or not to wrap. Brian made the extra gold touches for the mekugi and the elements that hold the kashira in place (I realize I don't know the term for these, someone want to venture it?) I chose to have them made and went with no wrap because I didn't want to detract from the metalwork or hide the menuki... and in the end bouncing it off of Ted decided just on simple black lacquer to let the fittings do the talking. The tanto is equally nice and it will be a good set. Just have to trim the sageo on a bit. Higher res: http://nihonto.ca/kagemitsu-koshirae-m.jpg Uber res: http://nihonto.ca/kagemitsu-koshirae-l.jpg Fittings are Kyo Kinko which is the NBTHK punting the ball a bit but the kozuka reminds me of Umetada with the striping. The Kiri is set in there free floating Sometimes stuff is a lot nicer out of the box and seeing them as the fittings maker intended them to be seen is just extremely satisfying. I feel like a 400 year old man somewhere is nodding and saying thanks for finishing it. Year long projects to find the right blade and right fittings and getting it made, but very satisfying when they come together. 12 Quote
Greg F Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 Hello Darcy, That is really really nice! Thanks for showing it to us. Cheers. Greg Quote
ggil Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 Very nice! Easily befitting a King. May we see a picture of the blade out of the scabbard. Or is there a link? I'll look if so. Thanks Quote
Henry Wilson Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 Nice... very nice. The kozuka is a splendid touch, very... playful. A purple sageo might be nice, to break up the homogeneity, as the kozuka seems to do. Quote
Fuuten Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 The fuchi, what i believe is the tsuba and the kozuka just match perfectly. Absolutely flawless:) Cheers and thank you for sharing the finished koshirae. Quote
John A Stuart Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 Darcy, I think they are still called Shitodome. Nice work. John 2 Quote
Brian Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 Love it, especially the contrast between some of the fittings being inverted in their colours. Really appealing. Classy, yet not overdone. Quote
Stephen Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 Quote Really appealing. Classy, yet not overdone. Agreed one without experience may have went with a gaudy overdone gold Kurikata, nicely restrained in not flying too close to the sun, as my art professor would say. Knowing when to stop says it all! 2 Quote
raiden Posted October 22, 2016 Report Posted October 22, 2016 Nice mount darcy! Brian does great work just like your other tanto mount he did for you. The sageo is fine, I think you don't need to trim it at all! My 2 cents worth. Mike 1 Quote
