Someone who is not a member of this board sent me some pictures of the tang of his gendaito tanto. He also speaks very little English.

He is unsure who made it.

I translated one side as Kenichi (or Ken-ichi possibly).

I have difficulty with the other side.

Does anyone recognize this signature or know who the smith might be?

賢 can be taka, yoshi, toshi, and ken as you found.

I actually looked this up. Same smith as a tanto that I just sold signed with his first name. Interesting! Any pics of the blade?

Masataka (政賢), Shōwa (昭和, 1926-1989), Tōkyō – „Bushū Mitake-sanroku-jū Masataka“ (武州御岳山麓住政賢), civilian name „Kōno

Ken´ichi“ (高野賢一), he was born in Meiji 24 (明治, 1891) and studied under Sakai Ikkansai Shigemasa (酒井一貫斎繁政), he lived in the

city of Ōmi (青梅) in Tōkyō Prefecture

Thank you gentlemen.

So the other side would read 15th day October 1943, if Jussi is correct?

As Joe said, the 賢 could also be Yoshi, etc. So, the owner had also considered that it might be translated as: Yoshikazu.

He only sent me pictures of the nakago. I'll ask him to send me a photo of the entire blade.

Hi,

Kōno Masataka (政賢) was born in Meiji 44(1911),not Meiji 24 (明治, 1891).
