I was hoping someone could read this sayagaki and give an me English translation of it. If I am asking for too much please tell me. I have spent a couple hours a day for the last few months reading several Nihonto books learning about the swords and trying to translate NBTHK and NTHK papers of swords that I have aquired. I think I'm getting worse than when I first started, without a doubt this has to been one of the hardest things for me but I REALLY ENJOY THE SWORDS!

Thank you

Hi Dino,

I am not very good at kanji but Tanobe sensei sayagaki are generally alike :

From top to bottom :

- Bizen Osafune Yoshimitsu

-two columns side by side : comment on the sword

- Nagasa : I let you decipher it, it is an easy one

- Date on which Tanobe has made the sayagaki and entered it in its record + signature

By the way, probably your sword is not far from 1450

Here is a picture of my wak Yoshimitsu kanteisho dtd Kosho

Hi Dino,

Rotated the pics so they are a bit easier to read. You say you have just started studying Nihonto? Well..you seem to have acquired some nice pieces there judging by this one :)

The only bit that I can be comfortable reading completely is the second section, left line. The others are patchy, a bit like looking through a glass darkly, and I am looking forward to someone's explanation of the rest. A great opportunity to learn! 8)

2nd section, left:

Muromachi Chu (Naka?) Waza no Tenkei-teki Saku

Typical work of the mid-Muromachi Period

3rd section down:

Ha Naga(Cho?) Is-shaku Kyu Sun Kyu Bun Jaku yushi(?)

Blade length One Shaku 9 Sun 9 Bun, a little less, having in total

I read that as follows;

– Bishû Osafune Yoshimitsu

(Chôroku yo nen-ki ari kore, dôkô kahin shikoushite kore deki wa)

(Muromachi chûyô no tenkeiteki sakuiki nari)

- Its date is the 4th year of Chôroku (1460). It is a good work of the smith, and the workmanship shows a typical style of the middle of Muromachi period.

(Hachô: ichi shaku kyû sun kyû bu jaku ari kore)

– Blade length is a little less than 1 shaku 9 sun 9 bu (60.3 cm).

(Hinoto-Ushi no toshi, Shimotsuki chûkan, Tanobe Michihiro shirusu)

– The middle of November in 1997, Tanobe Michihiro wrote.
