Joefriday22 Posted July 10, 2016 Report Posted July 10, 2016 Hello again, I purchased this sword from the same man as the other. I noticed that it's shorter than the other and the scabbard has a ring toward the bottom. I know that the tassels are not original but I wonder if these may have been brought back by the same guy and added by him later. Any comments or information would be most appreciated. Thank you very much. Best, Rob Quote
Stephen Posted July 10, 2016 Report Posted July 10, 2016 Kanehide, is there a star stamp above the mei? dated showa ju hachi, let you have a go at that http://www.japaneseswordindex.com/kanji/nengo.htm Quote
Mark Posted July 10, 2016 Report Posted July 10, 2016 December 1943. I think Kikuhide. Probably Showato, oil tempered, maybe not but that is my guess from pictures. It is genuine, the ring toward the bottom does not belong there but it looks antique and nice so has some value, it should slide off, be gentle with it Quote
Stephen Posted July 11, 2016 Report Posted July 11, 2016 corrected , thought it was Kane with no legs to stand on. KIKUHIDE (菊秀), Shōwa (昭和, 1926-1989), Gifu – “Kikuhide” (菊秀), real name Murayama Kikuo (村山菊雄), born September 21st 1905, he worked as guntō smith and died April 8th 1952 Quote

I had never seen the ring before but obviously I'm far from knowledgeable in this area. Best, Rob Quote
Brian Posted July 11, 2016 Report Posted July 11, 2016 That ring may be the remnants of an old fuchi that lost the top, and was added there for sentimental or decorative reasons. Quote

Thank you. I see no evidence of anything else having been attached to it but I'm going to leave it as found. Best, Rob 1 Quote
