teddf98 Posted July 6, 2016 Report Posted July 6, 2016 Hello I purchased this sword. Claimed to be from the Edo period late 1600s. Can anyone help me verify if this blade is genuine. Also added the small ornate copper knife that came with it. Thank you! Quote

teddf98 Posted July 7, 2016 Author Report Posted July 7, 2016 Thank you for your help. Has anyone looked at the signature in the copper handle of the knife? Quote
Surfson Posted July 7, 2016 Report Posted July 7, 2016 i think the kozuka is signed Goto Denjo. Quote
Surfson Posted July 7, 2016 Report Posted July 7, 2016 Here is a link to a previous discussion about this artist, and examples of the mei (which look a bit different). http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/3042-help-with-goto-kozuka-and-fittings/ Quote
ROKUJURO Posted July 7, 2016 Report Posted July 7, 2016 There is a possibility that the "knife" (= KOGATANA, the handle is called KOZUKA) is not copper, but an alloy (SHAKUDO), which has been stripped of its patina. It can be restored by specialists (Ford Hallam). Quote
Stephen Posted July 7, 2016 Report Posted July 7, 2016 With out a doubt the Kozuka was "cleaned" of its patina Quote
Brian Posted July 7, 2016 Report Posted July 7, 2016 But looks like it is possibly of very good quality. Maybe. Quote
Prewar70 Posted July 7, 2016 Report Posted July 7, 2016 The mei is not correct, is it? On the sword. I did a quick search the other night and could not find where he signed this way. Quote
teddf98 Posted July 7, 2016 Author Report Posted July 7, 2016 Thanks to everyone for their input and information, I hope the sword is a real Tadahiro. I am a beginning collector and would like to learn anything I can. Please discuss over this sword as much as possible I am trying to soak up any knowledge I can. Tedd Quote
teddf98 Posted July 8, 2016 Author Report Posted July 8, 2016 The mei is not correct, is it? On the sword. I did a quick search the other night and could not find where he signed this way. After doing some research (very limited) I was not able to match this mei with any others on records. I am having a feeling it is a gimei. Quote
