Lets say somebody such as John Stuart (Thanks again John) is so kind to refer me to a Hawley number for some art I'm asking about.  Will someone please tell me: how do I take that number and make something of it?  Do I have to buy/borrow a specific book (or more likely ask someone at a club meeting to help me out)?  I'm getting sick of myself asking you all to do everything for me.

Hi Grant,

A Hawley's number is the unique number given to a smith in one of Mr. Hawley's books.  Masamune, for example, is MA 302 in the 1st edition blue books and MAS 590 in the later, expanded editions.  The numbers serve only to keep track of the listings in Hawley's and tell you nothing about a smith.  Knowing the number tells you where to look for the smith's listing in the book and nothing else.

OK, so I need to find Hawleys book on fittings (the item in question is a F/K set), and there may be multiple editions.  Does that sound about right?  What is the name of the particular book (or book set) that I'd need for F/K?

Hi Grant,

As Grey mentioned, the Hawley numbers only apply to swordsmiths and have nothing to do with fittings or F/K. Even with regard to sword smiths, if you have a copy of Hawley's "Japanese Swordsmiths" the numbers mean very little except as a way of using the number to specify a particular individual swordsmith from among the approximately 20,000 names listed. For example, there are a zillion Sukesada smiths, to tell someone which particular Sukesada you are talking about you can mention that smith's Hawley (index) number. The Sesko index of Japanese sword smiths lists more information than Hawley so there's far less need to own a copy of Hawley any more.

so if it is for F/K it's not  Hawleys book but Haynes Index book!!

Sesko is not anything more than a cross reference, as is Hawley

Hawleys has a Kuniaki and hes not found in Sesko

Kun 14    Kuniaki Okimoto Osaka smith not found in Sesko

So IMHO both need to be used

Hey Grey take a look at that Hayne's Index book for the fuchi signature I'm looking for information on in the translation section!  Thanks. :glee:

Haynes! So sorry guys I feel like a real dumbass again. Haynes put out catalogs, I recall. Thanks Thierry and everyone, especially James for the unintended pointer I needed. Maybe this post could be renamed Nihonto books for dummies, or something. Maybe, "what to do with Hawley and Haynes numbers"

Just bought the index for $135 shipped Amazon. Hopefully the condition is ok. Almost 3x

More than any book I've bought.

Hi Grant

No dumbasses here just clever members and very very clever members!

I asked some questions on using the Haynes Index so when you get your books (well worth the cost) do a Haynes Index search on this message board for some more pointers

Hi Grant

I've just bumped it so it is top of the list on the tosogu section

Let me know when you purchase it and I'll send a copy of the transcribed Wakayama
