Shamsy Posted May 20, 2016 Report Posted May 20, 2016 Thought I'd share this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/WWII-Japanese-officers-Gunto-army-Type98-Sword-Brass-Fittings-Repro-P-23-/162060782685?hash=item25bb934c5d:g:IkkAAOSw2GlXK17H Some pretty top notch reproduction parts from China. I'm genuinely quite impressed with these. While I don't get the best resolution on the tablet, these look to be pretty detailed and correct. Certainly copied from a sword someone greedily sold to China. Much cheaper than the real thing. I expect to see a few older and incomplete swords patched up with these. Quote
Kai-Gunto Posted May 20, 2016 Report Posted May 20, 2016 They have been for sale for some time now, like the tassels too. Quote
Dave R Posted May 20, 2016 Report Posted May 20, 2016 It would be interesting to see them in the hand, my experience with Chinese copies is that they fall down on details, or are even made of plated zinc alloy to pass as brass, copper or steel. Quote
Kai-Gunto Posted May 20, 2016 Report Posted May 20, 2016 They say they are painted red. wrong color. Quote
Stegel Posted May 20, 2016 Report Posted May 20, 2016 They have been for sale for some time now, like the tassels too. There is a seller from China that makes a really impressive replica of the type 98, it sells for about the $300 mark from memory. His listing shows up every now and then, if i see it again, i will link/post it here. It is by far the closest to the real thing i've seen. It would be interesting to see them in the hand, my experience with Chinese copies is that they fall down on details, or are even made of plated zinc alloy to pass as brass, copper or steel. The details from the replica i mentioned are very good. I agree in the past that it was their downfall, but not now.. Quote
Stegel Posted May 20, 2016 Report Posted May 20, 2016 Had a quick look, couldn't find the exact one i mentioned... over 10000 listings!! This one is pretty close with good detail. Price is a lot more than i seen before. The Japanese Army was in China for many years before they surrendered. I'm sure there are actually quite a few genuine swords that were surrendered or captured there. 1 Quote
vajo Posted May 20, 2016 Report Posted May 20, 2016 I have five unique Typ98 and they look much better than this replic. Why to buy a fake sword - i didn't understand. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted May 20, 2016 Report Posted May 20, 2016 Incredible accuracy! But they still puzzle me - why go to all that effort to manufacture something that well and still not pay attention to simple detail like the color of the paint? Quote
