Trying to figure this out on my own but failing... I think the second character is kune? but I'm not sure.

I'd appreciate some help!

Jason   , I was in disbelief that you couldn't read this signature .. Anyone who has John Yumoto's book should be able to read this easily . If you don't have Yumoto's book then you shouldn't be collecting . If you have the book and still couldn't get this signature then you shouldn't be collecting. Sorry if being blunt offends anyone.

Hi Jason

When I put my first tsuba I was blasted out of the sky but thankfully someone gave me a parachute!

After my initial put down (it was a crap tsuba) I've learnt so much from this message board so don't be afraid to ask questions as everyone started as a novice

As a learning exercise you could try this free website

If you find the kanji for kanemoto then put the kanji and something like nihonto or katana into an internet search it will show you a load of info

If you are new to collecting then please add a picture of the whole blade and you may get some useful advice

You will find most swords are not very desirable and someone will shoot it down but it is only words

We've all gotta start somewhere! :dunno:

I'm only a "second year" online-only student of nihonto and Year 1 was all about shinto blades (and I still have a lot to learn!).  Until I posted this thread I knew pretty much nothing about Koto blades beyond recognizing the names "Masamune" and "Muramasa", nor do I speak Japanese or read Kanji (much less old kanji).

Anyway, I just laid down a bunch of money for books and am working on fixing that.

If anyone here is offended by me sticking around and learning more, maybe you shouldn't be on the forum... seems to me the spread of knowledge about nihonto is reason this place exists, is it not?

Jason,
No worries at all. Our job (or it seems some take it more seriously) is to put you through the mill (like Marines Hell Week) and see if you come out the other side. If you do, you are good to go and will become a decent collector.
Since you have taken advice and bought some books and stuck it out  for a while, you'll be fine. :)

Don't pay attention of the Instructors along the way...they have your best interests at heart.

Yeah, my nihonto interest is definitely not a passing fad and I'm not planning to give up anytime soon. I'm certainly seeing the value in learning to read mei on my own though.  :glee:

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one, unless your post is really relevant and adds to the topic..
