Echizen No Kami Minamoto Nobuyoshi - Shinto Smith But Little Info

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I seem to be able to find this smiths brother (or family) but not specifically him. I also seem to find modern kitchen knives. Does anyone here know if this was a good Shinto smith. Also, was it more in style to have slightly shorter Katanas in the period with blade lengths around 24".

he is a well known smith.  Not sure about your library but he is in a lot of books.  He used Takai before his title at times. If you google him there is a lot of info out there, we have discussed him here on NMB before.  I have a 30" blade by him but i guess he could have made blades of any length. He worked late 1600's and i think longer katana were more common then

Mark,

Thanks, I guess I am looking in all the wrong places.  Would you consider this a good smith to consider as one's first Katana ( or overly long Wakazashi?)

Mark, I can't seem to find the discussions you mentioned. I'd like to find out a bit more about this smith from the boards view

Darius, please spend some time reading & studying before you start looking for your first blade. Or at least find someone local who has a collection, & find something that interests you. I was lucky to find a local expert who has a large collection of elite Kamakura Soshu & Yamashiro blades...& I got interested in Bizen. But at least I had something to base my interests on.

when i go to google and type "minamoto rai nobuyoshi" i get page after page of info including a page from Markus book on Shinto smiths. Not sure why you are not finding anything. I would not worry about adding a sword by this maker to my collection, i would worry if the blade was genuine, there are a lot of fakes as he is a well known maker

I'm still looking at this sword and until I receive my Index of swordsmiths by Markus sesko having a bit of a time with trying to figure out if this mei looks good.  Any thoughts.  Also, what kind of wrap in on this Tsuka, is it odd? Thanks

Darius,

it looks like a long TSUKA for a WAKIZASHI!

The TSUKA ITO is very probably leather; not uncommon at all.

Thanks, I haven't seen enough blades in person to have come across a leather handle such as this yet. , Maybe he made it for Smaller client.  Sorry, I'm attempting to be funny.
