I bought Jims Dawson's book for Japanese modern military swords.. Is there a like book for the Edo and old swords? What do you recommend?? Thank you! Dominic Quote

Reddawn27 Posted March 23, 2016 Author Report Posted March 23, 2016 Wow! That is one high priced book!!! Well I guess I'll start saving! Dominic Quote
Kevin Adams Posted March 23, 2016 Report Posted March 23, 2016 Nah, just buy it from Grey Doffin's site. Quote
Stephen Posted March 23, 2016 Report Posted March 23, 2016 THOSE are not my books, just showing what they want out there, Greys price is better than mine anyway. Quote
CSM101 Posted March 23, 2016 Report Posted March 23, 2016 If you ever have a chance to get a full set, then this should be your first choice: http://www.japaneseswordbooksandtsuba.com/store/books/b855-meito-zuikan-fujishiro An english translation is avaiable. If you don´t get one I have the translation three times. Uwe G. Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted March 23, 2016 Report Posted March 23, 2016 I gotta put this one out there. Gendaito Meisaku Zuikan is excellent, though focused on shinsakuto. Large format, beautiful pictures. http://www.japaneseswordbooksandtsuba.com/store/books/b498-gendaito-meisaku-zuikan-dr-sato Quote
Grey Doffin Posted March 23, 2016 Report Posted March 23, 2016 Hi Dominic, Not to blow my own horn (and thanks to those who did it for me above) but my site is an excellent place to learn what is available in books. Scroll through the pages to see what's interesting. If you find something but it's in Japanese, many of the Japanese books have been indexed in English. I'm happy to answer questions about the books so feel free. Cheers, Grey 2 Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted March 23, 2016 Report Posted March 23, 2016 And to toot further, if you find a title that you need and Grey doesn't have it, ask. He just may be able to find it for you. Quote
Reddawn27 Posted March 23, 2016 Author Report Posted March 23, 2016 Sweet!!!! Thank you guys!!!! Grey I'll be looking threw your site for sure!! Quote
Paul Martin Posted March 24, 2016 Report Posted March 24, 2016 http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/17415-nihon-no-bi-nihonto-the-Japanese-sword/ 1 Quote
Greg F Posted March 24, 2016 Report Posted March 24, 2016 The book Paul has a link for above is a really good quality book for eye candy and Paul has done a great job of the translations. Great fold outs of swords at actual size too. Grey always has great deals and always a pleasure to deal with too. Cheers. Greg Quote
Kronos Posted March 24, 2016 Report Posted March 24, 2016 The three books that come to mind are the two above (Compton's and Nihon no bi) as well as Japanese Swords of the Bizen Tradition by Darcy and Bob Benson. It's a great book but you'd have to decide if just Bizen-to is ok although I'd recommend getting all three Quote
DirkO Posted March 24, 2016 Report Posted March 24, 2016 I think the best is Nihonto Shubi - modern pictures and explanation by Tanobe. However in Japanese, ltd printing (500) and quite expensive. http://www.nihonto.com/12.3.14.html Quote
Stephen Posted March 24, 2016 Report Posted March 24, 2016 To start go with what you can afford, Compton will wow you for months ...location? Quote
drbvac Posted March 31, 2016 Report Posted March 31, 2016 Swords and fittings in the Boston Museum is a bunch of beautiful photos and explanations of the eras and history but I am not sure it is still in print Quote
