hi all,

from your experience, what is the thinnest kasane that you have come across? i am trying to find out what might be the thinnest kasane acceptable that a sword may be made to. tired swords not withstanding. i have a rusty blade with about 3mm kasane and the nakago is the same and thinner, so it does not look like it was polished down. anyone else have thin blades?

I have read somewhere about swords made in the very beginning of nihonto history (around the pre-heian period) are so thin that if held with the surface of the blade towards the ground (as opposed to the cutting edge) that the blade would slightly bend under it's own weight.

I think it has been concluded that they would not be much use in a fight and were probably used for ceremonial purposes.

thanks henry,

yes, a floppy sword would not be very useful. the blade i have is definitely not pre heian or close to that age. it has about 14" nagasa and so is still stiff due to its proportion. still, i have never seen anything that thin and was wondering if it is characteristic of any particular school or style.

have a O-kissaki O-suriage wak newly polished by Big Mo............

very thin but no core steel showing.

From the mune , it's about 2.25 mm throughout.

Some old nagamaki, which are mostly naoshi now, were made with a very thin kasane of ~3 mm or less. What does the shape of this blade look like? Shinogi zukuri? Hira zukuri? Thanks.

the blade is a regular shinogi zukuri shape and pretty deep mihaba, proportionally. it is at about 2.5 cm. it has a short, tanto like nakago and so does not seem suriage. no core steel showing. it has maru mune as well....
