Why can't we have such sales or auction in Europe... I have a hunch that there will be several swords up for sale soon..

So far no word from anyone who was there...If someone has details to share please post them. That sale likely had some decent if not great swords in the mix. It would be nice to see what came out of the hoard. Ed

I got a few out of there through a friend.  Nothing stunning,  All the ones I wanted and circled in the pics he sent me were sold on Friday night.  My friend went Saturday morning.  A lot of the blades were in poor condition but price decent.  There was no rhyme or reason to the pricing.  There was also some great native American stuff there but is was gone by Saturday also.  Wonder whose estate it was??

I didn't attend, but had a friend there also.  He said he didn't see anything of good quality or condition,  said a lot of stuff was misrepresented and that the group putting it on seemed very inexperienced.

I am interested in museum collections - and collections in general. My general feeing is that  collections of all kinds are going to collapse in the near future. This includes - IMHO - a lot of museum collections. It sure looks like this is a museum that has - well- collapsed. The forces that used to encourage and support collections like this have disappeared. And as a result, the collections are being dispersed. If there are good swords in that pile of what looks like 140 nipponto, serious collectors can accommodate them. What I find more interesting to consider is the impact this sale will have on the generic gunto market. What will happen to the gunto market when something like 80 clean Showa-to are now suddenly available? Are there enough militaria collectors to accommodate that bubble? I doubt it,

Prices at the low end are going down, friends!

You've made some astute observations that aren't readily apparent to many collectors. I believe the gunto swords sold in this sale would be easily dispersed among collectors and dealers in short order. There is a larger demand for military swords now, but I am unsure about current values. Online auctions have driven prices higher and there is definitely a leveling off recently. Collectors' markets seem to be down overall if not seriously depressed in many areas. I still hope someone who bought swords in this sale will share their new purchases. It's just normal collector curiosity to wonder what was in that pile!
