Just picked it up today.  Little bit of an odd story how I ended up with it. I have been wanting a red lacquered Type44 for some time.

I was always day late dollar short.  I inquired to a dealer I knew and he sold me a twin of a sold that just went off on the bay. Both were bought from the same source. So I can only assume both are Nagamitsu ?  He sold the 1st and this one without ever having them apart.  I was the 1st to have this one apart Im sure.

I did it because I could see no damage to the wrapping would occur.  Blade is blank less Nagamitsu signature and the ####'s on the spine and small Kanji possible arsenal stamp ?  Those that know these may know the stamp. Thank you and enjoy.  Was nice to find one that I didn't need translating. LOL

Nice find, I'm a Nagamitsu fan myself, especially in these mounts. What's the Nagasa? I'm assuming the eBay seller was reisel or something along those lines.

Not sure what you mean by Nagasa ?    Yes, he was the seller. I asked him about the sword and he said I have its twin !   So he sold it to me.  It was nice not having to be dragged through another ebay auction.   Both were bought from the same guy @ the same time somewhere in rural Maryland.   He never had them apart and sold the 1st as "un-known"  I think he left a few $$ on the table.  As I saw a type44 Emura sell for 2800.00  I have yet to see a type 44 Nagamitsu sell @ auction.

The signed Nagamitsu is nice. Have a few myself. I've never seen one that was mumei though. Hope is it a Nagamitsu, but I would question it. (Nagasa is blade length)

why is it questionable ? Was his signature copied in his lifetime ? Looks very clear and textbook to me.

for the novice what is  "mumei"

Just saying I've never seen a mumei (unsigned) Nagamitsu. As we all know he had numerous assistants, some of whom also signed his blades; so yes, his signature was "copied" during his lifetime - but by assistants in his own forge. The style of the mumei blade looks right, just not signed.

I saw one mumei blade in type 3 mounts a few years back at a militaria show. I would have staked a lot on it being by Nagamitsu. That doesn't mean that it was a Nagamitsu blade, but my opinion is that was. So at least this collector believes they're out there.

In regards to the other sword on eBay he sold, it could have been mumei, star stamped, emura, or another nagamitsu.  Chances are that it's a nice blade.

Your nagamitsu is very nice and is correct.  The nagasa is the measurement of the blade from the notch on the spine under the habaki to the tip of the blade in a straight line.  Although I know that some are not very fond of Nagamitsu, I personally like his blades, I currently have 4.  The nagasa on each blade are about 24 3/4", 25 3/4", 26 1/4", and 27 1/2".

There was 1 unsigned blade in the same mounts that was very characteristic of Nagamitsu that sold on eBay 6-12 months ago.  I don't have pictures otherwise I would share them.

this one is signed .  Not sure if you saw that ?  This one has three kanji in the signature where my other just has the two.  Looking on the sword page there seems to be many different Nagamitsu signatures.

Thanks for the reply. I know Larry personally and that's why I asked him. I was bidding and it went a bit higher than I wanted to pay even though it was worth the selling price IMHO.

I called him to ask him if the seller backed out or was returning it to let me know. That's when he said he had it's twin at the shop.  So we worked a deal and I bought it. I was wanting this variant for a while.  These Nagamitsu blades aren't star stamped apparently ?

Wayne,

Congratulations on scoring such a nice Nagamitsu. I have one that is in almost perfect type 3 mounts like yours, but the blade on mine has a suguha hamon instead. Mine also has the "saka" Osaka arsenal stamp on the nakago mune like yours to. Have fun enjoying it!
