Old Tanto ?

this Tanto I got from an older gentlemen, his father bought the Tanto once. Unfortunately, he could not tell me about the Tanto  .The blade is not signed. The length of the cutting is 28,5 cm.  Fuchi / Kashira with dragonfly motif.

Overall a nice Piece.

Perhaps not an "old" TANTO but very late EDO or even MEIJI.

SAYA is probably not original to the blade; too much SORI in comparison to the blade which seems to be MUZORI.

A nice find.  Jean is spot on with dating but the koshirae is pleasant and well worth the cost of a good re bind.  It should be easy to tell if the saya is not original, looseness around the habaki or lack of alignment would indicate this but sometimes tanto have saya that do not match the blade so worth checking.

everything is alright. The blade does not move in the Saya.

That the blade moves or not in the saya is not necessarily an indication of the saya being original or not to the blade. When the job is well done, the blade does not rattle in the saya. I have seen several example and even had one adjust.

Nice package. Notice the "pillows" on the tsuba, so the owner sent that extra step. The habaki is interesting in that I just came across that style on a Mishina Hisamichi purchased late last year. As was noted, the saya has much sori whereas the blade does not. But I've found old koshirae fitted to blades a number of times and if made to fit correctly, I would think the "owner" simply wanted to preserve a favorite koshirae in this way. Ron STL
