The brass plate looks as if it might have been engine turned, perhaps a European piece adapted to the tsuba.  The wire net seems to have a mesh that gets larger as it moves toward the rim.

 

Intriguing.

Tsuba en fer, ovale, ajourée en positif. Elle est fortifiée postérieurement d'une plaque de sentoku, intérieurement dorée et ornée d'un grillage de fils de bronze: 0,088 x 0,086. Bambous et oiseaux stylisés. Oeuvre d'un «Tsubako». Epoque des Ashikaga XVIe siècle. Provenant de la vente Hawkshaw, 1910, n. 5159. Reproduite dans ce Catalogue, pl. IX.
