Jim P Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 Hi Guys, Over the next few weeks I will be listing some stuff in the for sale section for a friend so will be trying to put some info together on the items the first is a tanto it has a faint mei and looks like Kuniyoshi but there are a lot of Kuniyoshi so which one ? Thanks Quote
Jim P Posted November 14, 2015 Author Report Posted November 14, 2015 Hi Guido, Are you saying you don’t think its Kuniyoshi ? I know it’s hard to see the mei but that was my guess, Also guys thoughts on age I was thinking mid to late 1500’s Thanks Quote
SAS Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 I could be way off on this, and I do not mean to offend, but the mei does not seem chiseled in with confidence but scratched in, the hamachi seems overly deep in relation to the nakago, the ha seems to have the shape of an over polished blade, (can't see the hamon) and the lacquer on the saya does not seem up to standard. Leaves me with some ??? Quote
Grey Doffin Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 Tough to say going only on the pictures but if I had to guess I would say this is an old tanto that has been polished too far down except for right above the machi (polisher's fumbari), the ha of the nakago has been moved back to recreate the ha-machi that the over polishing erased, and that the mei, wanting us to believe this is by an important smith, which it isn't, was added around the time the blade was mounted with the present tsuka and saya, one side or the other but not far off Meiji. I suspect this to be Hama-mono (dock work or put together for western tourists) and I would be surprised if there is much true value. And I can be wrong. Grey Quote
Jim P Posted November 15, 2015 Author Report Posted November 15, 2015 Hi Grey, Having it in hand my thoughts were old but you have got me wondering I thought late 1500's it looks very over polished and the shape messed with but I am still leaning to late 1500's but it’s still only a low end tanto so I will be selling it as such so for just a bit over $1000 I think its ok. I think it may not have been trying for a important smith as there are a lot of Kuniyoshi's its always good to get some thoughts from others as I wanted to give the best info I could put together some more photos it looks like there was something on the other side ? dig1982 Posted November 15, 2015 Report Posted November 15, 2015 Lost some geometries, ha machi is too bigger than the mune machi... Quote
Kronos Posted November 15, 2015 Report Posted November 15, 2015 Looks like a sue-seki kazu-uchi-mono type deal that's had a hard life dressed up for the meiji export market. Hard to tell really. Quote
