Hi All, This is a new sword I have purchased papered to Hokkyo Koansai before he changed his name. Nijimei, Jumyo. Shodai of the Kondo line, after all his name used to be Kondo Sozaemon, and Nidai of the Owari Jumyo. Lots of movement in those days, looking for sponsorship and steady work. Anyhow, I have no references here and wondered what the name for this particular style of horimono was especially with the carving in the middle. Thanks John

Maybe added later I guess. Why? Who knows?. But, there must be a technical term. Interesting how the small hi at machi goes to middle and does that loopy thing. Bored horimonoshi? John

John,

If I look closely, I can see guide lines that indicate there was an intention to carve another hi to match the other 2.

Look to me like a work in progress, done afterwards. Maybe a project that remained unfinished for some reason.

It is indeed quite odd :)
