Fuuten Posted November 6, 2015 Report Posted November 6, 2015 Could someone explain for me, as this would be my first time seeing something like this, if its something that's hosted online or is it somewhere in the US? I don't own enough nihonto related stuff, but i could donate a chawan or yunomi if that would be allowed, my ceramic collection is a lot bigger:) 2 Quote
kissakai Posted November 6, 2015 Report Posted November 6, 2015 Brian I'm happy to add two 'rice' booksSee link:http://www.militaria...099-rice-books/They are 120 x 180mm and in poor condition, one has been partly coloured in They generated some interest when I posted them earlier but more for someone who understands Japanese If someone won these but didn't find them interesting I'm sure they could offer them to the NMB members in the link above Grev UK Quote
Brian Posted November 6, 2015 Author Report Posted November 6, 2015 Axel, How it usually works is that people contribute prizes, and every $10 donation gets an entry (anywhere in the world) I use a random number generator program to draw the prize winners, and the sponsors usually send the prize. Forum can assist with postage if necessary. We usually allow a month or 2 for people to enter. I think a chawan or yunomi would be a great prize. Anything Japanese is always welcome. Quote
dig1982 Posted November 6, 2015 Report Posted November 6, 2015 Sorry but i don't have much thing related to nihonto, only a pair of sword and some books but they are essentisl for my study. Only who donate something can take an entry or everyone? Quote
Brian Posted November 6, 2015 Author Report Posted November 6, 2015 Diego, Anyone who wants to enter can do so....once I have the prize page up and running it will all be explained. It's open to anyone, members or not. Quote

Although i don't have many Japanese yunomi (i have some nice teacups but they're made by american potters, not sure if thats in the spirit so), i do have a pretty large amount of chawan, so i might put one of those up(?). I'm kinda broke, but i think i can muster up 10 bucks. It sounds like a lovely event, and i would be honored to assist/enjoy (not to mention you can actually win something). Quote
reeder Posted November 6, 2015 Report Posted November 6, 2015 I will donate a 1-year JSSUS membership & an iron tsuba. 1 Quote
Stephen Posted November 7, 2015 Report Posted November 7, 2015 Purchased for raffle, i hope its good enough for few entries. 1 Quote
drbvac Posted November 7, 2015 Report Posted November 7, 2015 Book: Japanese Swords in the British Museum I was going to donate a foggy edo wak but it is not worthy 2 Quote
Brian Posted November 8, 2015 Author Report Posted November 8, 2015 Thanks guys, looking good. I have some hiccups in that i need to work on some logistics. Raffles are "verboden" by PP, which is an issue. Think I'm going to have to sell something (electronic article or something previously unreleased?) for any contribution amount, and then enter all customers into a free prize draw. Credit card can be accepted directly via Payfast, which is already set up, but I know a lot prefer PP. All a bit of a headache, but am working it out. Quote
tagheuer Posted November 8, 2015 Report Posted November 8, 2015 Just a suggestion, within a specific time frame, any $10 donation will automatically get one raffle ticket. Quote

Don't worry about it, just call it a donation and for every $10 donated you get a "free" entry into a prize draw. Or alternatively, draw a picture of a cat in paint, copyright it and sell that for $10 per print. Quote
Brian Posted November 8, 2015 Author Report Posted November 8, 2015 Well, it will have to be a donation. There is no possibility of it being "purchased entries" The prize draw will be a separate thing, with entries allocated to those who supported the forum via contributions etc. But would be good to be able to sell something via digital media with entries being allocated to that too. Can't risk a PP account block. Quote
Nickupero Posted November 8, 2015 Report Posted November 8, 2015 I'll see if I can find something worthy to donate, worse case scenario it will be in the form of $$$, or even possibly both an item and a bit of dough. 2 Quote
Stephen Posted November 13, 2015 Report Posted November 13, 2015 in hand now so a better photo, if the winner would like the gilding removed, just let me know. it was lead plugs. hope this brings in a few more entries 1 Quote
Gasam Posted November 13, 2015 Report Posted November 13, 2015 Hi, I will donate an original lapplander or same (natives of northern scandinavia) 8" knife as used by the natives for centuries and to this day. Knifesmith Strømeng out of Karasjok makes the real deal and knife will be from his workshop. Edit: see www.samekniv.no for mr strømengs website. So much quality cutlery.... Just for clarity, i have no affiliation with this smith or any business selling same blades. But they are wicked good :-) 1 Quote
John A Stuart Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 Cool! There are some Same here that came in the 20's with the reindeer. Thanks for the link. I am curious what the price range is, there are none on the site. My son has a Same friend he met in Tromso who makes these as well. John Quote
jason_mazzy Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 I will donate a Nihon NO Bi translated by Paul Martin with priority shipping in USA included. That is a minimum $80 value. International may be different and will have to figure out shipping then. Quote
Gasam Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 Hi again, John: how cool, I had no idea there were Same in Canada. The typical price of a handforged Same knife from Strømeng will be in the 1.000 to 1.200 Norwegian crowner range, normally about 175 USD but with todays crappy excange rate since oil price drop its about 130 USD. The exchange rate is good for export, bad for importing. Makes it near impossible to buy nihonto in USD unfortunately.... Quote
JoA Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 Hi I will throw in one copy each of our two books (armour related, so I hope I don't scare people now to join the raffle :-) ) New and shipping from Japan to the winner included. Jo 3 Quote
Brian Posted November 14, 2015 Author Report Posted November 14, 2015 Some fantastic prizes, thank you guys! I am still working through the logistics, and hope to have a page up about this by the end of the month. Quote
Brian Posted November 22, 2015 Author Report Posted November 22, 2015 I have started to contact the sponsors of the prizes to confirm the donation, and gather images of the prizes. If there are any new prizes, prize images or details that I still need, please pm or email me so that I can add them. I may still need to contact one or 2 of the people in this thread. Dealers....vouchers are always a great idea as they do hopefully lead to repeat future business and don't involve shipping. Memberships to the JSSUS or NCJSC likewise. People who sponsor prizes will of course also be entered into the draw, as will anyone who has contributed the past few months. Brian Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted November 22, 2015 Report Posted November 22, 2015 Here are the tsuba I'd be willing to throw in. I'll take care of shipping to the winner as well. 1 Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted November 23, 2015 Report Posted November 23, 2015 I've donated all my spare books, etc. to my sword club where I'm an officer, so I'm just going to send Brian a PayPal donation. Ken 1 Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted November 24, 2015 Report Posted November 24, 2015 Brian asked that I add better pics, since it appears that I simply uploaded thumbnails on accident. I couldn't get the files to upload, so I am adding embedded links to larger photos. 1 Quote
Brian Posted November 24, 2015 Author Report Posted November 24, 2015 Thanks Joe, If you are having problems uploading pics, please check out and reply to the thread here: http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/18180-uploading-pics-problems/?view=getnewpost I need to get to the bottom of this. Quote
