There was no year end raffle or fund raiser last year. Ran out of time, inspiration and maybe energy.

But it would be very useful to consider one this year. So just putting it out there, and wondering if anyone has any ideas. Takes a lot of time and effort to co-ordinate something like that again, but they have always been successful in getting us comfortably through the next year. Thoughts?

Brian,

First off, I have a good tsuba I will commit to donate, regardless how we want to do this. A couple of suggestions:

1. A raffle like we did a couple of years ago.

2. Set up an auction for items donated, and all proceeds go to the forum. This might be a fun way to spruce up the holiday spirit.

I'm sure there will be a zillion other ideas forthcoming from others.

Regards,

Hoanh

Hi Brian

Would it help if the donators were given the details of the winner as they could post the item direct

I know you have to reject some items which can be difficult for the donator so you need to add guidelines

It should be obvious that a low value donated item should never be offered for the raffle

Also trying to cut down your workload if a donor offered an item and it was accepted they could post the item

I think any comments to help you reduce your workload would be of benefit

You need to charge for a raffle ticket and anyone could purchase as many as they wished

In the past the raffle was $10 per entry. It did work well, as long as there are enough prizes to make it worthwhile. It was difficult co-coordinating a lot of book prizes though, but there were some great books. Donators of prizes would have to ship directly, as once again SA doesn't seem to have a functioning post office :(

But the forum can cover shipping if necessary.

I'm just testing the waters here. See if we have enough to make a success of it, and see if there is any grand prize.

I've got a tsuba or two I would be happy to kick in. I would also consider a 10-15% discount on swords I have available for sale (listed on the board or otherwise if someone is crazy enough to want to collect top flight gendaito).

It would definitely be a raffle rather than an auction..more fun and better chance for everyone. And I think $10 allows everyone to have a go. $20 will buy 2 tickets = more chances of winning :)

Brian, is this raffle/fundraiser something that will help YOU to keep NMB happy/healthy/up-&-running?  If so, I'm interested.

Ken, it would help US, not ME :)
It's the way we survive here and do what we do. Next step is a better host and server with faster everything and no downtime. The free image hosting (pretty much unlimited) is taking its toll. I think we have over 250,000 attachments and one of these days that is going to implode. Very few (if any) forums allow image hosting to this level....they expect you to use Photobucket etc. But our members are not your average teen internet fundi...so we have to keep this as simple as possible.

Anyways, I guess it is going to depend on the support in the way of prizes. Dealer vouchers like Grey offered are always great, and Markus' books are awesome too.

Fittings, and related items are great.

Let's see if there is enough support to make this viable.

I can offer these three items and combine them as one raffle prize.  I will post them free of charge direct to the winner.  1. Catalogue of old Japanese photographs with price list,  2.  An old Japanese book, 7x5 inches, 21 pages, some of which show designs for fittings etc., 3. An old "paperweight", very heavily corroded but  useful as a desk ornament.

Would give vouchers of 50% off on any of my print books and several eBooks (full, no vouchers of course).

Also have a signed copy of my Japan's Most Important Sword Fittings here that I will put in.

[Edited as initial post didn't make much sense :)]

Thanks folks..this is looking very promising.

Let's keep this running for a while, and then I will start gathering pics and making arrangements. Really appreciate the support.

I have book I could donate, if it's of enough interest.  I picked it up at auction in my first wild-and-crazy days.  It's a 1977 edition of a Japanese technical / metallurgical analysis and comparison of tachi recovered from burial mounds to more modern nihonto.

We'd need to get a formal translation of the title and author though.  Can anyone help here?

I think I can donate some books. I will group these into a package and I can slip in Hawleys leaflet to help starting with translating mei (even though resources are now great online it's still nice thing to have as backup if you don't have many books).

"Beginner set"

Clive Sinclaire - Samurai

The Craft of the Japanese Sword

Fuller & Gregory - Miltary Swords of Japan

Cutting Edge - Japanese Swords in British Museum

Hawley - Japanese Sword Inscriptions

Thank you guys, this is looking very promising. Looks like there will be enough initial prizes to begin work on a prize draw.

Could I ask those who are willing to sponsor a prize to email me a pic or 2 of the item to brian at nihontomessageboard dot com?

I'll start collating them and editing the pics so that I can draw up a prize page. Really appreciate all the support.
