Hi Members

Would it be safe to assume, that if a dealer is noted in the commercial drop downs at the opening of the forum page, that they are recognized by fellow members to be reliable trusted dealers in Nihonto.

Regards

Hi John:

I have not dealt with all the people listed. "Reliable trusted dealers in Nihonto" not sure as always be a cautious buyer. Everyone makes mistakes. There are good, better and worse in every group. You may want to ask about a specific dealer or to use the search function to see if there are good or not so good reports on that particular dealer.

Hello John

All i will say is that there is a dealer on that list who i would certainly not recommend to newbies, for many reasons. Pm me (if need be)and i will give you those reasons.

Its up to folk to know what they are buying and what they should be paying, sadly newbies are lacking in this department and tend to rush in, reminds me of the Elvis song:)

Most ive dealt with on that list have been a pleasure to deal with, maybe not a pleasure for them to deal with me, i ask too many questions, but rightly so.

Thank you gentlemen for your replies , i have done some research on the swords i am interested in and the dealers that are selling them.

my assumption was that if the dealer was in the commercial section ,various members had dealt with them over the years and had recommended them to the forum.

Thanks

Hi John

Your assumption may be right, my opinion was just that, an opinion.

There may well be hundreds of happy customers out there whos opinion differs to mine.

A case of doing your homework and then buying wisely.

John,

I can show you compliments and complaints about just about every dealer out there. No-one is 100% perfect, as long as money is involved. In general, the ones that participate on the forum are subject to more scrutiny and easier to verify. Asking about others will get info or pm's containing advice.

Most of the listed dealers are ok to deal with, but it is up to you to use due diligence of course.

Thank you Brian and Alex

You are right Brian you cant please everyone all the time, you will always get someone who is not happy,

I agree with you as well Alex i have been around, although not in Nihonto but have been quite successful financially in my life, so i will always try to use due diligence in whatever i do..

i did not want to offend any dealers by naming the ones whose swords i am looking at and asking the forum if they are reputable, my question was just general.

Thanks again everyone for your comments.

Nick Ricupero is very honest and has some nice stuff on his website at nihontoart.com

I bought from him a katana with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon certificate. The sword is very nice and in quality polish.

I also recommend Wakeidou in Japan, very nice items for sale.

Ed-Yakiba, Darcy-Nihonto.ca, Andy-Nihonto.us, Bob-Togishi.com are the big fish I have had personal experience with and can therefore recommend. I am sure there are many other great dealers.

I too have nice pieces on my site and many happy clients.  Though, I am just a minnow.

Nihontoart.com = As was said above - NIck Ricupero is a dealer in Canada and with the US dollar as high as it is you may get some good buys even though the prices are in US dollars.

Bought several swords from Nick and he is easy to deal with and honest - only reason a blade may seem higher priced when compared to others is that they are all papered and bought personally by Nick as he goes to Japan several times a year - I am not sure where he finds them but some are spectacular and they are priced accordingly.

Best and largest number of photos per blade and furniture on the net for a dealer.

Highly recommended

John,

Why not goto a dealer in person? If your in the UK as your handle suggests there are reputable dealers you could visit. Always better if you can see a sword in person and also this would save you the cost/risk of shipping/importing.

Hi Mark

I actually now live in Vancouver Canada and have visited several dealers since living here and have purchased a few swords.

You are right it is better to handle and view swords in hand, than look at pictures and read descriptions but sometimes you have to go online.

That is primary why i ask my question that started this thread.

Again i would thank all that took the time to respond to my question.

Danny Massey of www.nihontocraft.com.

A great and upright seller, no BS, no hard sale, excellent execution. Highly recommended. Has some high quality swords. I bought several excellent pieces from him, one I have missed :bang:
