rodrig4 Posted September 22, 2015 Report Posted September 22, 2015 Hello. Here is a naginata that I just bought. It is the period Edo. The blade is signed Sagamino kami fujiwara kunitsugu. Saya 19.68 '50cm Nagasa 17.32 '44cm Motohaba1.18 '3cm Sakihaba 0.98 '2.5cm Could you give me a more informed opinion on this new acquisition. Thank you. Rodriguez. Quote
paulb Posted September 22, 2015 Report Posted September 22, 2015 Dear Rodriguez The problem is the current condition doesn't give anyone much opportunity to see anything other than the shape. From what can be seen as is: 1. Shape looks to be late Edo. It is a better shape than many naginata of this period which tend to be shorter and with a deeper curve, they look more of ceremonial use, than a weapon. Yours looks like it was meant for use. Having said that I think the Hi look to be rather clumsy suggesting the workmanship is not exceptional 2. I am more concerned regarding the heavy pitting along the edge. It looks to have lost a fare amount of metal and I am not sure how well it will polish. having said the above you obviously bought it for a reason so perhaps a good starting point regarding more information is for you to share what it was you liked about it that made you decide to buy it? Alex A Posted September 22, 2015 Report Posted September 22, 2015 Hi Rodriguez., its signed Sagami no Kami Fujiwara Kunitsugu..............not Sagamino Grabbing at straws here, but... just had a very speedy look through the Japanese sword index, there is a Sagami no Kami listed for Genroku period 1688 He was ranked Wazamono, but he signed (and someone correct me if im wrong) Sugu次 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted September 22, 2015 Report Posted September 22, 2015 Alex, I always thought 次 was TSUGU. At least it's in the books that way.Sorry, I misunderstood! You meant the different KANJI in the MEI. Quote
Alex A Posted September 22, 2015 Report Posted September 22, 2015 Hi Jean, yes, sorry i mean Tsugu, last kanji. (missed off the T ) Quote
rodrig4 Posted September 23, 2015 Author Report Posted September 23, 2015 Hello. I failed to mention that mune is Matsuba-saki. The form of the naginata leads to think that it seems to be a ceremonial element. Were they with forged with these characteristics? Best regards. Rodriguez. Quote
