SalaMarcos Posted August 15, 2015 Report Posted August 15, 2015 I found this strange menuki on the omote side of this tantô. It seems a post "yubinkyoku" but the man is doing something like "take out the ashes" so it seems also a boiler or stove...or maybe for cooking.. I don't have a clue. And the most impressive thing is the namban numbers and letters in the upper part. I can read "IO31" Someone has any idea? It is from a museum so they don't let me take out the menuki to see if it's signed or not. Quote
Justin Posted August 15, 2015 Report Posted August 15, 2015 Cleaning the BBQ? Strange binding too. Looped style ito. 1 Quote
Tanto54 Posted August 15, 2015 Report Posted August 15, 2015 Can you show us the other menuki and fittings? It may help in determining the subject. It does look like a mailman collecting letters… However, many antique Japanese boilers/stoves have arabic numerals, so a stove or boiler may make sense (perhaps a steam locomotive firebox?) Quote
Bazza Posted August 15, 2015 Report Posted August 15, 2015 It looks to me as if the binding has been disturbed and the original menuki taken out and something else substituted. The "something else" may have been small but NOT Japanese menuki???? BaZZa. Quote
SalaMarcos Posted August 15, 2015 Author Report Posted August 15, 2015 I also supose that it was not the original menuki, but seems Japanese... I thinked it's maybe a yubinkyoku post from early Meiji... The other fittings has not so much interest.. Quote
