Andi B. Posted August 4, 2015 Report Posted August 4, 2015 Hello,I have here a tsuka with nice fuchi and kashira (flute, fan and rattles on a fine nanako ground) but with somehow strange menuki (see images). They are golden roosters but they look like embossed "press plates" (?)... What do you think about their "quality / value"? Are they nevertheless authentic?Should I keep the tsuka as it is or are they unacceptable and I would not lose anything if I would reuse the fuchi/kashira/same for a new tsuka? Quote
John A Stuart Posted August 5, 2015 Report Posted August 5, 2015 They may be those foil types with a core of resin. They have this look of being pressed to form. John Quote
Andi B. Posted August 5, 2015 Author Report Posted August 5, 2015 Hi John, yes, if I touch them, they feel/sound like foil with a non metal core. What is the origin of those type of menuki? Quote

John Hi John and all, yes, but to me they have a look of gold rather than the plain brass (sorry, shinchuu) that these low grade menuki are mostly made of????? BaZZa. Quote
John A Stuart Posted August 5, 2015 Report Posted August 5, 2015 I have a gold foil pair as well. They look good when mounted. I just think it is a poor man's gold menuki, poor being relative. John Quote
Barrie B Posted August 5, 2015 Report Posted August 5, 2015 Andi, Looks like reasonably good quality Tsunami maki (style) tsuka.. It is up to you of course, but I would be inclined to leave it as is.. If part of a koshirae, then I would have thought it would be fine. Just my (practical) two cents… Barrie. Quote
