The show is oversold with tables, and I have it on good authority that there will be new dealers from Japan (one emailed me saying they would be there).   The kantei light set up will again be available for free use, but due to the number of tables sold and lack of space, it will no longer be under the large tent in the corner.

 

There will also be a NBTHK exhibit (free for members, open to general public for a fee - Correction:  I've been told the general public viewing is on Friday, but don't quote me).  No shinsa this year.

 

Largest nihonto collector show outside of Japan.  Happy hunting!

To clarify the NBTHK events at the San Francisco Token Kai;

 

The NBTHK American Branch will host an exhibit and lecture on kodogu on Friday, August 7th, at 2:00 pm.  NBTHK members from all branches are free admission (please bring your membership card if your membership is with the Tokyo or European Branches as we only have rosters for American Branch members), non-members are welcome to attend for a nominal admission fee.  Usually this is $10 to $20, but the fee has not yet been determined.

 

On Saturday August 8th, from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm, the NBTHK-AB will host an exhibit and lecture on Tanto open to NBTHK members only.  Immediately following the lecture will be a forum also for NBTHK members only.

The time is near folks - getting excited - our annual To-ken Taikai is just a week away. Besides the events listed below there will be a showroom full of more than 100 dealers from all over the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe and Japan. Collectors in the know wait for this show every year, the largest Japanese sword show and sale outside of Japan. Thousands of swords at every price point for every level of interest. I'll be there all weekend, hoping to see all my NMB peeps there and if you do come down make sure you tell em Big Tom sent you!

Greetings everyone,

 

The exciting S.F. is coming on fast!  Mr. Ikeda, a well-respected Japanese polisher will be set up to open windows and do small scale polishing tasks...please let me know if you have something to keep him occupied!

 

I have shipped three juyo blades and several other Tokubetsu Hozon and hozon level pieces...lots of interesting pieces at good prices! Exploit the power of the almighty greenback!

Looking forward to the SF show later this week. Always lots of high quality items available to study and purchase. Personally, I'll only be at the show until late Saturday afternoon at which time my daughter arrives and we head off for a northern Cal vacation. The only sword I'll have with me which I hope to find a buyer for is my Oya Kunisada (Shinkai's father, shodai) wakizashi. I'll mention this under F/S Items in more detail.

What I dig in these shows is the friendliness of the participants, newbies or not you will be part of the WNB (Worldwide Nihontophile Brotherhood)...

Great weekend - maybe not as many walk-ins as usual but many folks reported good sales. Including one guy who sold all nine swords on his table to a single buyer! I personally saw many great swords in hand some at the wonderful NBTHK/AB exhibit and some out on the tables. I especially enjoyed the Norishige tanto, the Niji Kunitoshi tachi and a Bizen Tomonari tachi, all of them very good for the eyes!

The NBTHK American Branch presented two lectures; Kodogu on Friday, and Tanto on Saturday.   While I did not get images of the Kodogu display, I did of the Tanto display.  Here is a shot of the line up, and the stars of the show;

The American Branch often allows non-members to attend the lectures for a nominal fee.   This display/lecture was only for members for reasons of expediency to allow for the most time possible for study and to accommodate for a subsequent American Branch general meeting.  However, on hearing the swords that would be available for study, at least one person enthusiastically joined at the door and he was not disappointed.  This line up of Tanto was a stunning opportunity to see some of the finest examples of tanto inside or outside of Japan.  

 

The Officers, Directors, and entire body of the Membership wish to express their sincerest gratitude to those owners that so generously allowed us to study these superlative blades.

Mind you had I been in the same room as that line up I may have thought I had died and gone to nihonto heaven. Sounds like a great opportunity for those able to attend.
