Thanks for the comments guys, but why don't you like the tsuka on the kake? does it damage it ???

it dosent fit the saya correctly as I made the kake for other swords.

please let me know if I should change it to prevent possible damage.

I'd be interested in seeing the tsuka of the crew gunto next to a standard type 98 or the like.

Really nice display. The flags are fantastic! I've been warned about exposing them to fluorescent or natural light. Supposed to destroy the material and colours (just what I was told, no idea if that's the case).

Hi steve, I would say that's true, luckly theres no inside lights, the top is glass too so only the ceiling light to help brighten the display, and its working really well.

the tsuka on the crew gunto is very interesting, I will post some pics

That's good to hear about the lights. I'm sure being in the case will help to.

thank you for taking the time to post additional pictures. I've not seen many crew gunto, so always interested to see examples. I believe that they were usually special order, as the unique fittings typically demonstrate. Was this one sourced in Australia or from elsewhere?

Hi steve,

I got this one from the USA, from a bloke named Mike yamaguchi I think, and assocated with the JSSUS in some way??

it also has the original tsuka cover, which has the sakura image stamped into the leather on the inside

Well that's the icing on the cake! The original foul weather cover to boot. Particularly good to as that also dispels the possibility that the sword is a cut down regular gunto. Having spoken to Jim Dawson about this, his advice was to check tsuka width as the best method of determining that it is an original crew/pilot example. You've got a terrific example there. Hold onto it, they're so rare you may never find another.
