Ken-Hawaii Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 I'd like a check on this mei: Bizen koku ju Kagemitsu. Thanks! Ken Quote
ROKUJURO Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 Ken,I can read BIZEN KUNI no JU KAGEMITSU Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted July 17, 2015 Author Report Posted July 17, 2015 Thanks, Jean. I was fairly sure that the "koku" wasn't correct. I'm looking forward to getting the blade to see if it's what I think it is. Aloha! Ken Quote
Geraint Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 Hi Ken. My understanding is that koku and kuni are alternative readings and while we almost always use the kuni form in reading the mei certainly koku is used sometimes, vis this sword from Tsuruta san, http://www.aoijapan.com/wakizashi-bizen-koku-ju-osafune-kiyomitsu So not wrong at all. All the best. Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted July 17, 2015 Author Report Posted July 17, 2015 Oh, you're just trying to make me feel better, Geraint! But thanks for letting me know that little tidbit. Ken Quote
Guido Posted July 18, 2015 Report Posted July 18, 2015 There are two ways to read this mei, both are acceptable: Bizen koku jū Kagemitsu Bizen no kuni no jū Kagemitsu However, one should not mix these reading styles, it's either koku jū or no kuni no jū. The NBTHK, btw & fwiw, preferres the second type of reading; they also use yoki-wazamono insead of ryō-wazamono. 1 Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted July 18, 2015 Author Report Posted July 18, 2015 I'm sure glad that there are people like you, Jean, & Geraint to educate us, Guido. The more I study, the less I seem to know! Aloha! Ken Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted July 23, 2015 Author Report Posted July 23, 2015 Okay, I just got the blade in from Japan, & it's everything I hoped for. However, there is a small sayagaki in a strange place, on the mune side almost at the tip. And I can't read it, so any help would be appreciated: Thanks! Ken Quote
Geraint Posted July 23, 2015 Report Posted July 23, 2015 Hi Ken. It is just the mei of the blade, sort of, "What's in this shirasaya? Oh yes, that one." All the best Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted July 23, 2015 Author Report Posted July 23, 2015 Really? Thanks, Geraint. I thought I was getting better at translating.... Still seems like a strange place for the sayagaki. Ken Quote
