mfarrar Posted September 28, 2007 Report Posted September 28, 2007 Hi all, Just picked this one up, gunto mounted katana with family mon badge. It is o-suriage, 25.5" Nagasa. Quite a lot of activity in the hamon. Would be grateful for some opinions on age/school. Thanks, Mark Quote
jezah81 Posted September 29, 2007 Report Posted September 29, 2007 Hi there, In my opinion your sword looks like it has nice hataraki in the hamon and jihada. But what i dont like is the reddish looking rust on the nakago. Im interested to see what others on this board say. Kind regards, Jeremy Hagop Quote
mfarrar Posted September 29, 2007 Author Report Posted September 29, 2007 Hi Jeremy, My first thoughts when looking at the blade, especially the activity in the hamon was that it looked similar to a Yokoyama Sukesada blade. However I used to have a yokoyama school blade and it was big thick and heavy like most Shin Shinto blades. This blade is on the other hand is quite thin and light, which makes me think it is more probably Shinto. Quote
pcfarrar Posted September 29, 2007 Report Posted September 29, 2007 My bet would be its an Owari seki shinto blade. It looks Mino with a strong soshu influence. Quote
kitsune Posted September 29, 2007 Report Posted September 29, 2007 Hi, I think this blade shinto because of the masame in the shinogi ji, with a Mino and Soshû influence. Maybe Kanbun shinto, with such sugata. Quote
Jacques Posted September 29, 2007 Report Posted September 29, 2007 Hi, Could not be Kanewaka ha? Quote
mfarrar Posted September 30, 2007 Author Report Posted September 30, 2007 Hi Jacques, I have been looking up Kanewaka and think you could be right there, dont think its the Shodai (unfortunately) but it could be one of the later generations. Quote
Jean Posted September 30, 2007 Report Posted September 30, 2007 The blade has a Shinto look. Nie appearing on the pictures, sunagashi .... Makes me think once again to this blade : http://www.swordsofjapan.com/Hocho.htm Or this one: http://www.artswords.com/022606akisuke.htm Could not it be a shortened shinshinto blade reviving good old Koto? Jean Posted October 1, 2007 Report Posted October 1, 2007 Another link from Big Mo website : http://www.nihontoantiques.com/fss210.htm Quote
mfarrar Posted October 2, 2007 Author Report Posted October 2, 2007 Hi Jean, More food for thought thanks. I will get it in to next years Shinsa, and let you all know the result. Quote
Jacques Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 hi, Nie and sunagashi appear in many schools, sugata and line of the hamon are very important (we have no help with the nakago). The exemples showed by Jean (Salut le titi :D ) have a hamon wich is not in accordance with your blade one. Shinza will be the last judge :D Quote
Jean Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 Jacques, You are right, shinsa will decide : Moët Henessy (wait and see) Quote
