Surfson Posted June 18, 2015 Report Posted June 18, 2015 Maybe it's unfair to assume that the two swords listed by this seller are made in China, but I have to say that the pieces coming out of China are looking more and more convincing. I didn't study the meis or do more than just glance, but have a look at both of his listings and please share your thoughts. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Japanese-samurai-sword-gendai-katana-signed-nihonto-/251994231233?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3aac06d1c1 Quote
Grey Doffin Posted June 18, 2015 Report Posted June 18, 2015 There is a thread elsewhere on NMB discussing these bare blades on ebay and whether they are real Nihonto or fakes made somewhere else. Concensus was, I believe, the latter. 2 reasons for fake come to mind. Why is a blade in polish bare except for a habaki? Perhaps they are made and then the customer gets to choose the koshirae. The seller on ebay doesn't want the extra expense of koshirae (which may be so obviously modern that it would tip off potential customers) and sells them bare. The other reason involves something out of whack with the blade but if I mention it here the fakers will get a lesson I don't want them to have. Grey Quote
Surfson Posted June 18, 2015 Author Report Posted June 18, 2015 My inclination is reproduction (fake) too Grey. I'm just worried at how good the steal, the calligraphy on the mei and the finishing are getting. We will soon be challenged increasingly by such ferric imposters. Quote
John A Stuart Posted June 18, 2015 Report Posted June 18, 2015 Absolutely. From Fuzhou, the price, the polish, the hamon. Scarier and scarier when perfected. John Quote
lonely panet Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 a cheap and fun way to trim the roses, that is it Quote
Clement Posted June 20, 2015 Report Posted June 20, 2015 still... US $810. Not so cheap for a fake ! Quote
Brian Posted June 20, 2015 Report Posted June 20, 2015 That's because they think they are getting a Gendaito. Brian Quote
davepsilon Posted June 20, 2015 Report Posted June 20, 2015 a source for the inscription perhaps http://kako.nipponto.co.jp/swords/KT111922.htm Quote
Chango Posted June 24, 2015 Report Posted June 24, 2015 I'm a noob and can tell it's a new blade... honestly, modern repros like Paul Chen, Bugei and the like go for that price and are of around the same quality. Still it's a major sin trying to pass it off as Nihonto. I wonder if someone is getting unmarked finished blades from a higher end reproduction company (or companies) and forging signatures on them?
