fromaes Posted April 26, 2015 Report Posted April 26, 2015 I'm new in the forum and I have no idea about Japanese hat I'm seeking opinion about the possible age for this 3 Japanese jingasa .Any comment on it would be welcome. Best Cerjak Quote
Peter Bleed Posted April 27, 2015 Report Posted April 27, 2015 The last item is a not - I think - a jingasa. It is a straw rain hat related to a "mino" and typical premodern peasant dress. Nice, but not military gear,. Peter Quote

Nice, but not military gear,. Peter Peter, actually they were military gear, what do you think a samurai wearing armor wore over his armor on a rainy/snowy day? They were even worn by samurai when just out and about as well. There was actually a full set which included hat, cape and skirt, straw boots as well for snow. I seems to have given quite good protection, some of the hats I have seen had a water proof lining. Quote
Peter Bleed Posted May 6, 2015 Report Posted May 6, 2015 Yeah, and I'm told that in Viet Nam the CIA guys all worn blue jeans. Banana Republic and L. L. Bean have outlets in Baghdad. If somebody want so display these with their armor, they sure can. If you want to buy some go to any to the better mingei-ya stores..I used to buy wari-zori at a fly fishing shop. I never saw an mon-zukuiri mino, tho. Peter Quote

uwe Posted May 17, 2015 Report Posted May 17, 2015 Cerjak, Jingasa are a difficult topic and many fakes on the market lately, claimed as been Edo period. I think all you can do is judge the material where the urushi is flaked off. Both seems old, but who knows?! The flower mon is Hanabishi type and quite common. For the Hishi-Gata (diamond shaped) mon, can't finde a match. Better regard it as give aways! Uwe Quote
Toryu2020 Posted May 24, 2015 Report Posted May 24, 2015 Cerjak I would think late Edo and based on the two mon on the first hat I would bo looking at Matsumae han... -t Quote
Toryu2020 Posted May 24, 2015 Report Posted May 24, 2015 ps Matsumae being in the extreme north, the rain (snow) hat actually might belong with these pieces... -t Quote
