sayagaki translation help

Hi All,

 

I have been racking my brains for a while on this sayagaki.

 

I think I have got the top four kanji as:

Soshu Ju Tsunahiro

 

The bottom left hand side kanji as:

Heisei ? roku nen go gatsu jyu shi hi (1989 ? 6th year, 5th month, 14th day), possibly the year and date the sayagai was done.

 

 

Any help on the rest would be greatly appreciated.

Someone wrote the sayagaki in 2004 and he claims that he copied the original sayagaki written in Meiji period by Honami Heijiro.

 

 

相州住綱廣 (Soshu ju Tsunahiro)

 

時代天文 – Era: Tembun (1532-1555)

錵付互ノ目乱皆焼 – with Nie, Gunome midare, Hitatsura

刃長長サ九寸参分有 – Blade length is 9 sun 3 bu (= 28.2 cm)

明治 ? ? 春日 - a day in spring of Meiji ? ?

本阿弥平十郎師極写書之也 – this is a copy of Honami Heijuro’s appraisal

 

平成拾六年五月吉日 – a lucky day in the 5th month of the 16th year of Heisei (May, 2004)

Thats very interesting, the Tanto has NTHK npo papers with it and I have had the remarks section translated, the translation puts it "The latter generation, toward the end of Taokugawa period" (pictures attached)

 

Another thing I have noticed is that the kanji for Hiro is different on the nakago 廣 and the papers 広

 

More investigation required I think.

Hi,

 

Many thanks for that, I knew they were the same but wasn't aware that one was old style.

 

I now must determine which one is right, the papers or the sayagaki :D

Hi Mark,

 

The jigane is the clue to the age. I believe the NTHK are right, also if you check the nakago you will see very little wear.

 

I was a previous owner of this tanto :D

Hi Mark,

 

I saw your Sadakiyo today. Was very tempted as I have a Katana by Amada Sadayoshi and it would be nice also to have a katana by his student. I'll probably end up buying it no doubt :lol:

 

The only info I have on the tanto is that a previous owner sent it to Japan and had what he called a "cheap" polish. The original shirasaya was in such a state that it was not worth keeping so he got someone to copy the sayagaki onto the new one.

 

It's a very nice tanto, I should have kept it but Bill had a katana I wanted!
