Hot Fuzz Posted April 11, 2015 Report Posted April 11, 2015 Hi all, I have been keeping my eyes open for an affordable tanto to start myself into collecting. This seems like a good offer, however I can't help noticing how severe the rust damage appears on the hamon. It looks as if corrosion has taken place. I was wondering if this sort of damage is like hagire, and most will find it unforgivable, or if this is still worth trying to buy. Quote
drbvac Posted April 11, 2015 Report Posted April 11, 2015 Seems like it goes too far into the steel to ever polish out and the blade probably isnt worth polishing anyway. Not supposed to comment on items that are still listed but Daimyou has been around a while and always tends to have lesser quality blades for sale. You can certainly get it plus shipping at a low enough price that it could be just sitting around but it will never be worth much Quote
Marius Posted April 11, 2015 Report Posted April 11, 2015 Don't. It will drive you nuts. The seller specialises in selling junk swords. Nobody wants them on Yahoo.co.jp and he lists the stuff at higher prices on eBay, hoping for treasure and bargain hunters with a... let us say... inadequate knowledge? Been there, done that, leave it don't be blinded by the low price. Whatever you pay for it, might turn out to be too much. A halfway decent tanto is much much more expensive. 1 Quote
Darcy Posted April 11, 2015 Report Posted April 11, 2015 If you view this as bidding on and buying a habaki and forget the tanto is there that's the only way to value this one. That crater on it is huge. This is the kind of blade probably suitable for polishing practice. It's not high art to begin with and that crater is not restorable. Quote
cabowen Posted April 11, 2015 Report Posted April 11, 2015 Please keep in mind that tanto are made without shingane. That means you can polish them down to a toothpick and not worry about shintetsu showing through. So, if this was to go for a few hundred, and you are willing to gamble on a polish, why not. The rest doesn't look too bad...Or, machi-okuri and remove it.....you'll end up with a small mamori-gatana from the Muromachi period for a few hundred dollars....Can't even buy a decent custom knife for that... b.hennick Posted April 11, 2015 Report Posted April 11, 2015 Whenever I see that particular seller I turn away quickly. I have dealt with him in the pas and never will again. Quote
Ed Posted April 16, 2015 Report Posted April 16, 2015 I have a friend who refers to him as "Damn you". Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted April 17, 2015 Report Posted April 17, 2015 Interesting. I've dealt with Takako for quite a few years, & if a problem arose, it was taken care of with little fuss or bother.... I would consider that divot as a hagire, by the way. Ken Quote
