Fuuten Posted April 2, 2015 Report Posted April 2, 2015 Hi there, I received a sword today, and when first unsheathing the blade, it had like, small drops of what looked water, but probably was oil all over the blade, some parts gave of a hue like gasoline does on the highway if someone had a leak, the array of colors. I haven't cleaned and re-oiled the blade yet, but I'm wondering if this has been over-oiled or maybe the flight over here caused a 'strange' formation? and if this forms any risk. Thank you in advance, Quote
Jean Posted April 2, 2015 Report Posted April 2, 2015 No risk for the blade. Is it a shirasaya or a koshirae. Always the same questions, where do you live? Do you need to have it oiled accordingly? Wipe it and, only if needed, reoil it slightly. The saya could be soaked with oil when oil dries it can accumulate dust and oyher things which can scratch the blade. Quote
Fuuten Posted April 2, 2015 Author Report Posted April 2, 2015 It is in shirasaya, as it arrived. I wiped most of the drops off. I'll recheck if it maybe shows signs of these things when I'll take it out again. I live in the south of the Netherlands, where its generally rainy, but i have them in a room that's generally the same temperature. Thank you Jean. Quote
Daniel Posted April 2, 2015 Report Posted April 2, 2015 Hi Axel I would say yes, the blade was a little over oiled. I guess the sender did it to protect the blade during transit so no worries. Hope you enjoy the blade. Best Regards Daniel Quote
Fuuten Posted April 2, 2015 Author Report Posted April 2, 2015 Thank you Daniel, I'm sure i will! This was the tachi made with another wakizashi + daisho fittings:) I'll enjoy it hopefully for a long time! Quote
brannow Posted April 2, 2015 Report Posted April 2, 2015 If I am concerned about shipping better swords I will oil the blade and wrap the blade with celephane wrap. This keeps quriouse fingers off the blade and the oil from the inside of the saya. It has worked well in a couple international shipping situations. Quote
