This omi-yari has popped up for sale on ebay, and it has grabbed my attention. It does not look to be signed and is rather rusted, but is advertised as Muromachi. I am not sure whether the current price listing is a good deal for this piece. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I guess it depends on what you like, Ryan. Yes, it's a yari, probably mid-late Edo, & very much out of polish. If you just want to own a real yari, this could be it, but I'm not sure it's a great candidate for polish....

Hi Ryan.

The very long kerakubi does suggest Muromachi jidai.  The images are not really clear enough to see what you are buying and then of course there are the issues about polishing.  To compare have a look at this one, http://www.aoijapan.com/yari-mumei-unsigned-3 Once you set polishing costs against the purchase price you will have an idea about what you want to bid.

Have fun.

To be fair I bought from this seller before, but before you use ebay check out their store front! They have a lot more items and it's cheaper I think cos they raise the prices on ebay to cover the ebay and paypal fee's. Like most Japanese dealers, they're open to negotiations if you're cordial, but that's my experience at least.

I got this really small O-Kogatana koshirae for an O-kogatana I had, and of course, i didn't fit haha. But for the price I paid I was pretty happy :).

But for this piece, like everyone else said - try to think down the line and ask yourself if you'd really be happy with it a few months down the line, or if saving even just a couple hundred dollars would go further into something else you'd really really want. But check out the website instead either way. Best!

Hello,

This yari is in bad condition and seems to be of low quality. Beware of the bright red laquer which can hide huge flaws in the bohi. As Geraint says, very long kerakubi are usually seen on koto yari. I will skip this one......
