reeder Posted February 24, 2015 Report Posted February 24, 2015 I recently acquired this tsuba. And help/opinions would be greatly appreciated. I have included some close ups of some of the details. Quote
jlawson Posted February 24, 2015 Report Posted February 24, 2015 Copper but a bit abused. Looks to me goto-esque although not goto of course. Very hard to tell from the photos but could be sanmai construction etc, as I have seen similar in the past. Not much else I can offer based on the photos presented. 1 Quote
Kurikata Posted February 25, 2015 Report Posted February 25, 2015 Looks like a Sanmai Awase style tsuba too me (do you confirm that three plates are held together by a border ?) . Quote
reeder Posted February 25, 2015 Author Report Posted February 25, 2015 It looks like its held together by the border but not sure how to tell if 3 different pieces. The border looks like a separate piece from the rest of the tsuba. Would this be early Edo? Or late muromachi/momoyama? Quote
Kurikata Posted February 25, 2015 Report Posted February 25, 2015 I would guess early Edo (end of 17th century) Quote
Geraint Posted February 26, 2015 Report Posted February 26, 2015 Hi Brandon. If the tsuba is sanmai then it should be possible to tell by examining the inside of the hitsu ana and nakago ana. All the best. Quote
kissakai Posted February 26, 2015 Report Posted February 26, 2015 Hi BrandonIt was suggested that it looks like a sanmai (3 plate), Awase style tsuba This shows the rivets although these are not always used and may be held in place just by the rim This shows the three layers. The top and bottom layers are about 1/2 to 1mm thick So you should be able to see the construction (if any) on your tsuba I hope this helpsGrev UK Quote
