Bazza Posted February 11, 2015 Report Posted February 11, 2015 Gentle Ffolke, The following item has sold on eprey. It is billed as a naginata but looks more like a Persian scimitar with its huge sori. I have no doubt it is a genuine Japanese item, but that sori... Any comments??? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/181656280560?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 BaZZa. Quote
Brian Posted February 12, 2015 Report Posted February 12, 2015 Very interesting. I guess just proof that swordsmiths must have been just as experimental and curious as any craftsman. Maybe it was a special order, or made experimentally for horseback use. No way to know for sure, but it is very unique, and looks well made. Thanks for sharing Bazza. Brian Quote
obiwanknabbe Posted February 12, 2015 Report Posted February 12, 2015 Please correct me if I am mistaken, but the term Naginata may not apply here. Nagamaki perhaps? Or a hybrid thereof? Kurt K Quote
nagamaki - Franco Posted February 12, 2015 Report Posted February 12, 2015 Please correct me if I am mistaken, but the term Naginata may not apply here. Nagamaki perhaps? Or a hybrid thereof? Kurt K Naginata, long pole mounted. Wonder if this piece was actually ever used, perhaps, displayed across the front of the shop for advertising??? Quote
John A Stuart Posted February 12, 2015 Report Posted February 12, 2015 I see no reason why this isn't an out of the normal parameters, naginata. It seems perfect for those long sweeping cuts. John Quote
Soshin Posted February 15, 2015 Report Posted February 15, 2015 Hi, It looks like a Nagamaki to me. The nakago and blade looks too long for to be a Naginata. It would have also been mounted on a much shorter pole if a Nagamaki. Quote
estcrh Posted February 15, 2015 Report Posted February 15, 2015 Someone paid a lot of money for an item that had a couple of horrible pictures. Quote
Grey Doffin Posted February 15, 2015 Report Posted February 15, 2015 A common result of retempering is exaggerated sori. I would think that's at least a possibility here. Grey Quote
