To All Concerned,

I have a major problem and I am requesting assistance from you all to help to resolve this.

I would like to report a stolen sword and file a complaint against Mr. J.C. Perrin, who owns a business called Rising Sun Art (http://www.nihonantiquaire.com) in Paris, France.

To recount the history of this problem. On September 2013, I sold him a shinsakuto by Enomoto Sadahito (in which he brokered a deal for an unknown 3rd party that actually purchased the katana through him). This transaction went well and was completed with satisfaction from all parties concerned.

I had another sword, an original Japanese tanto forged ca.1570. It has a copper habaki and in shirasaya. I wanted to sell this blade as well and J.C. said that if I would let him hold on to it, that he could probably sell it for me. This blade was appraised to be worth 4000 euro…. which was the price that I wanted to sell it for.  I had trusted J.C. as I have had dealings with him in the past, and had just concluded a significant sale to him in regards to the Enomoto katana.  Perhaps this was a foolish mistake on my part, but I entrusted J.C. with my tanto and its NTHK paperwork.

Months passed and I grew concerned. I emailed him on several occasions and received an email back from him stating that he could not sell this tanto and how it was in such bad condition (as it WAS NOT). I instructed him to send the tanto back to my home address, and that is where he ceased all communication with me.

I have tried countless times to make him respond and send my property back... which he has not.  I have heard that he (Perrin) had dealings with a German auction house (referring to this Baden-Baden auction) and that this auctioneer illegally traded and sold off much of his inventory. Now, Mr. Perrin's dealings are not of my concern, but if my tanto was among the items sold off…  then Mr. Perrin is obligated to make full restitution to me... and then some for this long period of unresolved angst, stress and difficulties that this has caused.

I want you all to understand this, and if you personally know Mr. J.C. Perrin, could you please ask him to return what is mine…  as it is the honorable thing to do. You must have integrity and trust in your profession, I do not know why he violated that trust…  but, I will have my tanto and its paperwork returned to me.

Some information about my blade:

Type of Blade:  Tanto

Smith: Attributed to “Seki Kanesake”

Location/Date:  Mino Province, end of Muromachi, ca. 1570

Description:  32.3cm, hira zukuri, wild gunome midare hamon, ubu nakago, 1 mukugi ana, munmei, attributed to “Seki Kanesake” by NTHK Gokaku Paper.  In very good polish.

Thank you for listening.

Best Regards,

 W i l l i a m

Hi William,

What a nice tanto. Sorry to hear you having so much trouble and I do hope you get back. Do you live in the same country as Mr. J.C. Perrin? If so might be able to contact the local and national law enforcement authorities. If you live in the USA and shipped the tanto via USPS to Mr. J.C. Perrin then I would contact the USPS postal inspection service with a fraud complain.

Would USPS have any further interest, in an item that was delivered to the named party? There is an admission that he has the tanto!

Hi Denis,

Not a lawyer or anything so correct me if I am wrong but if the United States Postal Service was used in the commiting of a crime it is a federal offensive in USA. It is the responsibility of the Postal Inspection Service to investigate such cases.

Hi David

Just can't relate to a crime involving the Postal service, after months had passed since an item had been delivered. But must agree, a rip off seems to be the objective here, and some agency needs to step in.

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for your concern in this matter...  I really do appreciate it.

To clarify the situation,  I live near Stuttgart, Germany and JC Perrin resides in the vicinity of Paris, France...  so David, the USPS is not an option to pursue.  I would like to caution you all from ever doing business with Perrin, lest the same thing happen to you.  Pass this on about him and his business, Rising Sun Art (http://www.nihonantiquaire.com).  @ Clement, I believe that they (Perrin and the Auctioneer) are both crooks...  the auctioneer was just the better one.

Regarding authorities, I do not have any law enforcement ties,  per say,  in Paris...  but, I have friends who do.  So, I may enlist their aid in establishing Perrin's location/whereabouts very soon. As I am former military and do have some friends in that area who happen to be French ParaCommandos...  but, that would be a little extreme... yes?  hahaha...  then again,  maybe not.

Now,  Mr. Perrin,  if you out there reading this, it really is just a matter of time before I find you...  and there will be a reckoning.  So, I would strongly suggest the following...  return what is mine, as it is the honorable thing to do.  You will make a full restitution to me, and include a substantial stipend to cover this long period of lies, unresolved stress and difficulties that you have incurred upon me.  You have forgotten that an individual that deals in Nihonto must possess both integrity and trust,  whereas you totally violated those two principles.

Christin, I understand the feelings you have, but, I would be a little more careful in wording possible outcomes. It might be construed wrongly, although I don't know how, if something were to occur, your liability. John

Let's just say that the post remaining here serves as insurance that anything doesn't happen ;-)

I can understand the frustration of being conned, and think that every avenue needs to be exhausted in seeking recompense. Aside from anything physical of course. Use any resources at your disposal to locate him, and then let the legal system handle it from there.

Gentlemen,  (Stuart, Doffin...  and Brian)

Please forgive me if you misconstrued my message as a threat of violence...  this was not my intention.   You all seem to be easily offended at pointed comments or views,  yet condone the actions of a person who steals ones property.  If I speak out of line or in a rough manner...  sorry, I guess that is a "side effect" of being a soldier who served his Country for 24 years...  and protected folks like you.

Well, I can see that you all will not lift a finger to help a person and straighten out something that you probably have some influence over...  because we all do have our connections.  I had calculated that one among you could contact someone that could be of assistance, or knows the individual in question,  and perhaps to persuade him in relinquishing my property...  but, what was I thinking?

I will not post again, so you may remove me from this forum...  which I am sure poses a great relief to your little quorum, after all you do not need any threatening individuals like me on your site.

A final thought.  If someone stole something that you cherished, would you not be angry and want it back...  and if there was someone who could possibly help in its recovery, would you not reach out and seek their assistance?

If there is anyone out there who can help, please contact me at william_christina@yahoo.com

Thanks

William,

Your post was a bit threatening and the amical warning given by Brian and others was for your own safety. Supposed that something happens to Mr Perrin in the near future, you could be on the suspect list. Beware that in some countries, such words as yours could be interpretated as threats it it comes to Court.

Mr Perrin seems to have disappeared from the earth, no answer to e-mail or Phone calls. I heard he has been seriously ill last year and he could be again in the hospital unable to answer any call or e-mail. Taking into consideration what happened with the auction where he was scammed, perhaps he has gone bankrupt and hiding or is being nursed in hospital for severe nervous breakdown.
