That's one big kogai!

Not too much to go by with the pics provided but it's definitely not Muromachi. It appears to be real, the punch marks around the nakago ana look good and they're on the correct side. Doesn't appear to be cast and it has some patina to speak of. I'd guess mid-late Edo from what I can see.

Not a big hitsuana, rather a small tsuba. John

Definitely a small tsuba but to my eyes it still looks unusually large. Measurements would be nice.

Later work, could be Kumagai or Tsuboi as well, or simply a Higo-style tsuba.

Whatever, very nice find, especially give the amount of trash on eBay. Well done

Chris, don't be grumpy and remember how we all started :glee:

While the tsuba is not a masterwork, it is real, and not China junk or Japanese crap, just a tsuba. And it was cheap, too. For $20-30? I call this an excellent buy for a beginner. Neither you nor me would buy it but that does not make it junk :)

Hey guys,

I bought it for 20 euro(about 30 dollar i guess)

The main thing what counts for me is that the tsuba is real and old.

Many thanks for the info

This is a scan from the Ito Mitsuru book on Higo Shimizu and Hikozo. Although this example is soft metal (it scanned better than an iron one in the book) you can see the similarity of the water dragon to the one posted on page one.

Completely agree.

Not junk by any means. It's old-ish and authentic, what more could you ask for $30?? I can't even take my lady out for drinks for $30.

This hobby should not and does not take a large amount of disposable income to enjoy.

dont be to hard on this nice little tsuba!

one mans trash is always treasure. firstly the look is simple and naïve, but well carved rim and dragon. if this was a soft metal tsuba from the sengoku every one would be tripping over to buy it, but its not

I think its a step up from the stuff of fleabay, and if fleabay if used properly you can find some nice stuff.

I know for a fact, but you just have to look through all the junk.

THE CLASS DEVIDES OF WHAT'S GOOD AND BAD BASED ON HOW MUCH WAS PAID AND WHERE IT WAS BOUGHT, IS NOT HELPFULL, in Australia we have something called "wine snobbery, if you didn't pay over $100 per bottle its rubbish, this is simply not true. its just something people with lots of money like to say toward those who enjoy a cheaper item.

Take the Yagyu tsuba, I think there very over priced and don't like them, but im not buying them so my thoughts arent relevant , Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

keep up collecting what you can afford, its a neat little tsuba

regards Hamish
