Sommer Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 Dear all, i bought this Tsuba a while a go and still can't say if it's real or fake. Can somebody tell me something about it? (Sorry for my bad english writing, i'm from Holland) Quote
sabi Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 That's one big kogai! Not too much to go by with the pics provided but it's definitely not Muromachi. It appears to be real, the punch marks around the nakago ana look good and they're on the correct side. Doesn't appear to be cast and it has some patina to speak of. I'd guess mid-late Edo from what I can see. Quote
John A Stuart Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 Not a big hitsuana, rather a small tsuba. John Quote

Ford Hallam Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 Screams Higo to me. no puzzle I can see... Quote
Sommer Posted December 9, 2014 Author Report Posted December 9, 2014 Thanks for the replay guys. I've looked at some Higo tsuba's on internet and indeed i could be Higo. Quote
Marius Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 Later work, could be Kumagai or Tsuboi as well, or simply a Higo-style tsuba. Whatever, very nice find, especially give the amount of trash on eBay. Well done Quote

Sommer Posted December 11, 2014 Author Report Posted December 11, 2014 Strange can't upload pics But the kogai measurenent: length:2,8cm width:1,2cm Tsuba: length: 6,8cm width:5,8cm Quote
Marius Posted December 11, 2014 Report Posted December 11, 2014 It is a good tsuba. No more pics needed, it won't turn out to be a National Treasure :-) But it is real, the carving is nice, the style is Higo. Quote
Sommer Posted December 11, 2014 Author Report Posted December 11, 2014 Thx Marius! I just started collecting tsuba's so i'm glad i made a good start :D Quote
christianmalterre Posted December 11, 2014 Report Posted December 11, 2014 an excellent start ???? i do see no "excellence" here.... rather that typical mess Ebay stuff. Sorry! Christian Quote
Marius Posted December 11, 2014 Report Posted December 11, 2014 Chris, don't be grumpy and remember how we all started While the tsuba is not a masterwork, it is real, and not China junk or Japanese crap, just a tsuba. And it was cheap, too. For $20-30? I call this an excellent buy for a beginner. Neither you nor me would buy it but that does not make it junk Don't get discouraged, ...... Anonymous? Sommer Posted December 12, 2014 Author Report Posted December 12, 2014 Hey guys, I bought it for 20 euro(about 30 dollar i guess) The main thing what counts for me is that the tsuba is real and old. I hope to find some excellent tsuba in de future and will inform this forum because you guys seems to know a lot of tsuba's Many thanks for the info Quote
Pete Klein Posted December 12, 2014 Report Posted December 12, 2014 This is a scan from the Ito Mitsuru book on Higo Shimizu and Hikozo. Although this example is soft metal (it scanned better than an iron one in the book) you can see the similarity of the water dragon to the one posted on page one. Quote
Marius Posted December 12, 2014 Report Posted December 12, 2014 Anonymous, Here is something to aspire to (and a Higo dragon, too): http://www.tetsugendo.com/kodogu/T-124_ ... aiRyu.html Quote
jason_mazzy Posted December 12, 2014 Report Posted December 12, 2014 What did that one sell for marius? Quote

I can't even take my lady out for drinks for $30. This hobby should not and does not take a large amount of disposable income to enjoy. Quote
Antti Posted December 12, 2014 Report Posted December 12, 2014 Excellent Higo water dragon tsuba: http://www.nihonto.us/JINGO%20WATER%20D ... 0TSUBA.htm Quote
lonely panet Posted December 12, 2014 Report Posted December 12, 2014 dont be to hard on this nice little tsuba! one mans trash is always treasure. firstly the look is simple and naïve, but well carved rim and dragon. if this was a soft metal tsuba from the sengoku every one would be tripping over to buy it, but its not I think its a step up from the stuff of fleabay, and if fleabay if used properly you can find some nice stuff. I know for a fact, but you just have to look through all the junk. THE CLASS DEVIDES OF WHAT'S GOOD AND BAD BASED ON HOW MUCH WAS PAID AND WHERE IT WAS BOUGHT, IS NOT HELPFULL, in Australia we have something called "wine snobbery, if you didn't pay over $100 per bottle its rubbish, this is simply not true. its just something people with lots of money like to say toward those who enjoy a cheaper item. Take the Yagyu tsuba, I think there very over priced and don't like them, but im not buying them so my thoughts arent relevant , Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. keep up collecting what you can afford, its a neat little tsuba regards Hamish 1 Quote
