Ken,

Not trying to be funny....but the way to come up with that idea is because that is what is depicted. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Knowing the items in question, that's exactly what is presented. Japanese didn't use Western smoking pipes or Western branding irons ;)

I worked though the plates, Malcolm, but didn't see either image.

Brian, I obviously haven't spent as much time in Japan as I should because I wasn't aware of the ladle & bits motif. I should have recognized the bits as I used to own a horse, but I guess 52 years is pushing that a bit....

Ken,

Your lack of motiff recognition in this case is far made up for by the fact that you live on the freaking beach in Hawaii!

That make up for a LOT of stuff in my book :rotfl: :glee:

Hi Ken:

Plates 32 and 33 (which together make the full image of the tethered Horse and attendants).

If you zoom in to the Horses face you will see the bit hanging to the left of its mouth as it has been removed while the Horse is rested (A strand of rope passes across it at about 2 o'clock).

Also if you zoom in to the single standing figure on the right, (the one with his index finger extended) you will see he has the Horse Ladle handle in his obi, the bowl of the ladle poking out at the back as it were, like a mini sashimono.

Plate 67 shows both, but you do need to zoom in.

Cheers

Kutsuwa handed down in the Mori family (Mori Ranmaru etc., not Mohri), belonged to Mori Nagayoshi. Christian Daimyo.

Your Kozuka reminds me of 'Rusu Moyo' that you get with Netsuke. Objects lying around give a strong impression of something not present, in this case a horse. Romantic notions! What kind of splendid horse might be worthy of these, the owner might wonder?
