Some optimistic pricing on swords. Or maybe the elite auction crowd likes to buy from Christies/Sothebys just to be able to say they buy there. Never understood it myself.

I know a lot of that stuff would sit at a two thirds of those prices if they were listed here or on dealers tables at the sword shows.

But some nice items nevertheless. Thanks for the heads up. Seems true that they just can't be bothered with Japanese stuff much anymore, since it fetches such low prices compared to other art.

Since they did away with their Japanese art department a few years ago this surprises me a bit. In fact many of the people that are at Bonhams now came from that department. It seems their prices are reflective of when they exited the business a few years ago. I imagine there will be some disappointed parties on the other end of this sale in regards to what sells for what price etc.

I think you are confusing Christies with Sothebys who did indeed drop from Japanese and indeed other arms and armour a few years ago. Chrisities have continued to hold Japanese art sales twice a year although from a different salesroom in the UK
