vfox Posted November 4, 2014 Report Posted November 4, 2014 Hello, I am thinking of buying this particular tsuba. I was told it is edo period shoami, but I am not an expert so I cannot judge for sure. It would be great to have some opinions on this! Measurements are: diameter 78mm, thickness 4mm, nakago 28x7mm. The designs on the front and back are identical. Thanks! Sincerely, Jay L. Quote
Soshin Posted November 4, 2014 Report Posted November 4, 2014 Hi Jay L., The details of the openwork doesn't look good. Might only be the photo do you have any additional photos of tsuba that have a better focus? Check my website link below in my signature if you want examples of better photos. Quote
Grey Doffin Posted November 4, 2014 Report Posted November 4, 2014 Hi Jay, The design seems clunky, not very exciting. You can do better. Grey Quote
Ford Hallam Posted November 5, 2014 Report Posted November 5, 2014 Actually Jay, you might check out Grey's own website for some decent examples at very reasonable prices. I'd daresay the best prices around, on average, and in terms of what's offered. Hope it's ok with the admin bods but here's a handy link. Quote
vfox Posted November 5, 2014 Author Report Posted November 5, 2014 Hello David and Grey, Thanks for the input. On closer inspection it indeed seems that the forging is not detailed. I suppose the forger of this piece was more concerned with the overall design rather than the subtle details. Here are a couple more photos. These are the best I could get. There appears to be a certain blurriness but I believe it is due to the surface texture of the tsuba. Sincerely, Jay L. Quote
vfox Posted November 5, 2014 Author Report Posted November 5, 2014 Thanks Ford I'll be sure to check it out. Sincerely, Jay L. Quote

Hi Jay L., The detail on the tsuba doesn't look good in my opinion specifically the execution of the ryo hitsu-ana. I agree with Ford. Grey has a really nice website and reasonable prices for the most part. Quote
