fishingply Posted October 16, 2014 Report Posted October 16, 2014 I am close to first sword and need little help? Had on have to have list for years and gone back and forth on what I want, or can afford!! Long story short have decided on WW2 Japanese Katana as long as real period sword don't care if machine made! OK have done my homework but this sword has no markings at all, have only seen in pics and all parts look period ? Know there are good fakes! My concerns are no file marks on the Habaki or the Mei . Any help would be greatly appreciated !! Having problem uploading pics? Quote
reeder Posted October 16, 2014 Report Posted October 16, 2014 It's hard to say without any pictures. Try resizing the pictures so that they're smaller and try again. A lot of the folks here suggest to buy the best sword you can and not just the 1st one you come across. Great advice, but I'm guilty of not following it all the time. Anyways, there are a lot of great folks here who I'm sure would be more than happy to help with your first sword purchase. Quote
fishingply Posted October 16, 2014 Author Report Posted October 16, 2014 Still can't upload pics? Have to make an offer on sword by end of week. Can I PM a picture to someone? Any help would be great! Is it common to have no markings on sword? And are there a lot of fakes that they go through trouble of ageing? Once again thank you for your help! Quote
Stephen Posted October 16, 2014 Report Posted October 16, 2014 FIRST Take from me its a Chinese fake, from your markings on blade line. PMing my email so you can send. Quote
Brian Posted October 16, 2014 Report Posted October 16, 2014 Here are the pics. They were hoplessly too large. Gotta read the How-To section to explain file size limits, how to post etc etc. I do think it is possibly a fake like Stephen said. But a good thing to remember is that anytime the tang of a Japanese sword has funky lines (not perfectly straight or have a wave in them that seems sloppy) then you are not looking at something good. Smiths prided themselves on clean and graceful lines with no "wobble" so this is already an indication that the sword is going to be sub par. Brian Quote
Jean Posted October 16, 2014 Report Posted October 16, 2014 IMO, Stephen is right from the start: Fake. From the picture, the nakago shinogi ji is widening toward the nakago jiri.... Quote
