kissakai Posted October 9, 2014 Report Posted October 9, 2014 Hi I'd like some help with this tsuba, recently bought from eBay It was described as Choshu Hagi and from an old (60 years) private collection Originally bought from a Japanese seller Subject Birds and snow flakes Size 64 x 60 x 4.3mm I thought it was more like Akasaka from around 1775 I could be a revivalist tsuba but it looks OK showing 'bones' Does anyone know what the stamp is on the box, sorry it is quite faded but I know what good eyesight some of you have The box looks quite new so can not be 60 years old As I didn't pay much for it and I liked so I can cope with bad news Grev UK Quote
kissakai Posted October 10, 2014 Author Report Posted October 10, 2014 Hi I realise that the stamp will be virtually impossible to decipher but I'd thought I may have got a reply about the tsuba school/type Going through my books again I was drawn to Owari but found similar a sukashi (snow flake?) with a ko Shoami example Any guesses? Brian Posted October 10, 2014 Report Posted October 10, 2014 Grev, All I can say is that it isn't a Choshu Hagi tsuba based on the ones I have seen and the one I own. Anything but. As to what it is, I have no idea as it doesn't have many feaures that stand out, and the plate showing signs of flat sanding/grinding doesn't lead me to Akasaka, but to late Edo generic work. Jorgensen Posted October 11, 2014 Report Posted October 11, 2014 This might help with the stamp Quote
kissakai Posted October 11, 2014 Author Report Posted October 11, 2014 Thanks Brian & Jimi san I tried to improve the image but it just got worse I'd be surprised if the box went with the tsuba The seller was adamant that it was Choshu hagi and as Brian said this was completely wrong I'm thinking Owari I has long shaped 'bones' on the mimi and looks and feels if there is some age to it Grev UK Quote
raven2 Posted October 16, 2014 Report Posted October 16, 2014 Brian is quite correct. Not even close to Choshu Hagi. Akasaka was my first thought, but Owari certainly is possible. I have attached a picture of a Choshu Hagi tsuba I own (picture was taken by Grey) Quote
kissakai Posted October 16, 2014 Author Report Posted October 16, 2014 Hi This is my paperd Choshu Hagi with HTKK papers So you can see why I discounted this tsuba as Choshu Hagi I've changed my mind about birds and snow flakes to all birds So it may be Akasaka or Owari Grev UK Quote
