Surfson Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 This is on ebay and already bid up to a decent amount, considering that it has been broken in half. What would the intentions of potential buyers be? I would assume that it is nearly impossible to weld it and make the repair undetectable. Grey Doffin Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 Make a new kissaki at the break and retemper a new boshi. Buyers beware. Grey Quote
cabowen Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 Welding it back together will not work out well and always be detectable. Satsuma-age anyone? Quote
Marius Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 If mei is legit, the tang could be used to do a tsugi nakago on a good sword... Quote
Geraint Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 A local dealer once assured me that a sword had been examined by a member of The Nakago Society. Perhaps there exists a shadowy group whose sole collecting interest is in nakago! ( A friend has a well signed nakago framed, odd things do turn up.) Quote
lonely panet Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 a fool and there money is soon parted out of polish, no features to see. WHY REGARDS H Quote
ROKUJURO Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 As usual, it depends on what you see in it and what you can do with it. The seller states:...Having value for research and study purposes..... I would use it that way or as raw material to forge knife blades from it. A repair is out of any possibility, but I have seen blades with a nice NAKAGO welded to them. It was usually well made but in most cases still detectable. Quote
Stephen Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 org question, what your willing to pay for it. make a heck of nice jungle machete Quote
Geraint Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 Hah! Now here's something you could do with it..........http://www.yamatobudogu.com/Antique_Nak ... nakago.htm Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 I have seen some broken blades offered as garden utensils to prune plants with on ebay. So there are various reasons to buy one. Some even collect these nakago, that is a fact. To these collectors it is the artefact which matters most likely. KM Nice for the garden : http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Japanes ... NA:NL:3160 Quote
Darcy Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 It's nothing a little duct tape can't fix! I do have a collection of nakago. But only looking to extend for pennies. Quote
Brian Posted October 9, 2014 Report Posted October 9, 2014 Darcy, If you find some for a few dollars, never mind pennies...I'll take them. Wouldn't mind a few nakago examples with a little bit of blade attached for reference and study. But I never see them for sale cheap. Let's face it, the buyer of this one can study the workmanship of a $10K smith for a fraction of that amount. I agree I wouldn't pay that, but you can see everything a sword features, except use it as a weapon. Assuming it is shoshin of course. Which it might well be. Brian Quote
