CurtisR Posted October 1, 2014 Report Posted October 1, 2014 Good evening (here) all, I've been reading my ref. books but can't find an actual "proper" answer to this....question is; should one oil and clean (even with uchiko) the area UNDER the habaki and where the nakago ends? Obviously I'd have to be ver careful not to treat or change the Nakago area, but it's that inch or so underneath that I'm not sure what to do with and/or to. Shy of Uchico, perhaps alcohol? Nothing? Many thanks, Curtis R. Quote
b.hennick Posted October 1, 2014 Report Posted October 1, 2014 That is a tricky area. If there is rust in that area a piece can break off and scratch the rest of the blade. I clean inside of the habaki. Quote
cabowen Posted October 1, 2014 Report Posted October 1, 2014 You should always wipe up from the hamachi when cleaning and oiling, and down from the hamachi towards the nakago when doing the same. As mentioned, sometimes small pieces of dust/dirt/etc., can be dragged up the blade and can scratch. This is why you wipe up and then wipe down.... Quote
CurtisR Posted October 1, 2014 Author Report Posted October 1, 2014 Barry and Chris, you both make sense...and o.k. - up, then down. Thank you both! Curtis R. Quote
DGuertin Posted October 7, 2014 Report Posted October 7, 2014 I've always been careful to keep the habaki well away from the blade when applying uchiko, and always oil under the habaki. That being said, I also double check the inside of the habaki, just in case... Quote
cabowen Posted October 7, 2014 Report Posted October 7, 2014 It doesn't hurt to clean the inside of the habaki with a q-tip and alcohol now and then... Quote
