I ALMOST bidded on it! I had it listed on my watching list and was going to bid at the last second.....

Knew the tang was too short but under the impression it was shortened to make a evil tanto at one stage......

Good thing I saw this thread first, more to learn.....

Saw the jumonji-yari blade too, it is at $275 and climbing, d@mn! no money.......

That doesn't look like an outright fake to me.

It looks like a much bigger naginata blade that was broken, and reshaped. Same as you would do with a katana blade that has a hagire?

Machi are moved way up past the hi, and the dimensions all look reshaped.

Some of those late naginata have these badly cut hi filled with the red paint.

Not something that I believe is restorable, but I think it probably had its origins as something that was ok.

The other possibility is a ceremonial polearm that has been worked on.

I don't think it's a real nihonto. Shinogi isn't clear enough, "hada" and "hamon" look strange, the shape of the nakago and mekugi ana worry me as well. Maybe some tourist piece from meiji era? At least nothing worth to be bought in my opinion...
