Kronos Posted September 8, 2014 Report Posted September 8, 2014 I'd just like to know peoples thoughts on age of this katana based off the nakago alone (if thats possible). It's in late edo mounts however I have a sneaking suspicion it's later although I can't see any distinct stamps from the photo's but there's something under the tsuba and maybe a stamp in the red rust on the furst image? Maybe I'm just seeing things. Quote
Mark Posted September 8, 2014 Report Posted September 8, 2014 looks ok to me. I would not think Showa, my guess is Shinto Kaga Quote
Brian Posted September 9, 2014 Report Posted September 9, 2014 I was also thinking Kaga. Not Showa. Brian Quote
Geraint Posted September 9, 2014 Report Posted September 9, 2014 Hi James. What makes you think that the blade is later? Just curious. All the best Quote
Kronos Posted September 10, 2014 Author Report Posted September 10, 2014 Bad pictures, lack of polish/activity and paranoia  Just thought I'd check as my initial thought was late shinto or shinshinto but I want the koshirae and no point bidding more than what they're worth alone if the sword itself turns out to be less than an average mumei shinshinto piece. I've just found another picture where it doesn't look half as bad actually. Quote
cabowen Posted September 10, 2014 Report Posted September 10, 2014 Late shinto or shinshinto Kaga to me is reasonable.... Quote
Geraint Posted September 10, 2014 Report Posted September 10, 2014 James, I think you should buy it and, just to help you out, you understand, I will take that boring Shinshinto Kaga blade of your hands. Seriously, why would you split up a blade like this from it's koshirae assuming the two belong together? Nice little piece assuming that the moshirae is sound. Have fun. Quote

Oh I would never split a katana with it's Koshirae unless it was absolutely necessary (hagire, god awful koshirae with an exceptional nihonto etc). Merely stating I want the Koshirae and would be willing to pay a premium provided the katana made the entire package worth it. if you get my meaning. Anyway it's at a local auction and I've bid considerably more than their estimate so as long as there's no experts in the room it should be ok. Quote
Geraint Posted September 10, 2014 Report Posted September 10, 2014 Hope you win it James. All the best. Quote
