There were quite a few of them during the 1800's. Not easy to know which one this was.

Eg:

W: Bushu ju, and Choshu ju

D: ca. 1800

NTS: this artist worked both at Edo and in

Nagato Province. Some say he is also the Ito

school artist of this name, H 04737. None of

this is proved, and as in so many of the Ito

school artists, there seems to be several

generations who used the same name during

the Edo period

Quite a few more.

Thanks guys.

Here is the other side.

As to the maker I'm assuming one of the Masatsunes from 1800 or so as well. Seems too late and clean to be the earlier headmaster H 04737.0. Hard to say but does appear to be very good at his craft (at least in my opinion).

Agree with both of your statements. It's a lovely piece.

Hi Jeff,

I remember seeing it right after you purchased it. Really great tsuba! Thanks for sharing it on NMB. Don't really care to much about the linage of the Bushū Ito school. Mostly I just put then into two groups the many I don't like and the few that I do like. Your tsuba is in the small select group that I do like.

Aaah, I see it now!

I've been looking at quite a few Bushu/Choshu tsuba recently trying to get a feel for the carving technique and approach to composition - thank you for sharing this, I rather like it.

Hi all,

Here is another rather nice Ito Bushu tsuba with well carved floral design. Signed Bushu ju Masayoshi Saku. He was the 4th generation Ito Bushu master, lived Enkyô 3 (1744) to Kansei 8 (1796).

Very nice Seljo tsuba! Thanks for sharing.

I have enclosed a photo of the back side of my Masayoshi tsuba, showing branches and leaves.

BTW. I am organizing a translation of a Japanese book on Ito Bushu tsuba. If you are interested in participating, please see my announcement in the translation section:

(For some reason I cannot place the photo inline, sorry).

Jesper, you can tick a box stating you want the image to appear inline in the edit section under the added files.
