Kronos Posted August 19, 2014 Report Posted August 19, 2014 Could use some help translating this kogutana as I'm dreadful with kanji and this seems even more difficult. Thanks in advance. Quote
Gabriel L Posted August 19, 2014 Report Posted August 19, 2014 Try rotating it so it's right-way up (about 120° counter-clockwise) and give it another go. Spoiler below if you need it. 三州住人氏 Sanshū jūnin Uji Quote
David McDonald Posted August 19, 2014 Report Posted August 19, 2014 Dear James Here it is rotated. later david Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted August 19, 2014 Report Posted August 19, 2014 Sanshu brings back a fond memory of my first meeting with B.W. Robinson at the V & A. c. 1965 Sanshu can be read Mikawa. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikawa_Province Cheers Quote
Bazza Posted August 19, 2014 Report Posted August 19, 2014 Try rotating it so it's right-way up (about 120° counter-clockwise) and give it another go. Spoiler below if you need it. 三州住人氏 Sanshū jūnin Uji Is the entire mei shown??? It could be 三州住久氏 Sanshū jū Hisauji???? The kanji in question looks to me more like a variant HISA 久 than a NIN 人 ... Gabriel L Posted August 19, 2014 Report Posted August 19, 2014 Bazza, Maybe. I didn't spend any time checking the signature in records or anything. I could buy a possible hisa but I'm not sure myself. Quote
Kronos Posted August 19, 2014 Author Report Posted August 19, 2014 Aha that would explain a lot. I was looking at it the wrong way up Now I have the answer I feel I could of done it on my own had i been examining it properly. A good lesson learnt none the less, thanks everyone. P.S. Sorry about the rotation, I don't currently have any decent phto ediing software that allows me to rotate things other than 90/180° Quote
Kronos Posted August 19, 2014 Author Report Posted August 19, 2014 After looking again I think there may be 1 more Kanji not in the photo, under the Kozuka so I doubt they'll remove the Kozuka. This is from a Wakizashi auction that I'm thinking of bidding on so I should post the entire blade/Koshirae really. Just waiting to see if they can get me pics of the nakago as they can't remove the Tsuka for some reason... If anyone could give me possible matches from the partial signature that would be good but not necessary. Quote
Brian Posted August 20, 2014 Report Posted August 20, 2014 James, I wouldn't worry too much about the kogatana mei..they are seldom by the smith listed. Most of them are purely fantasy. Brian Quote
